Shall I buy 955?

Hello all,

I am a runner and been using Apple Watch S3 for a long time. I want to improve my running and I read loads of positive things about FR 955 online however after reading posts here in community I became little skeptic.

From what I have read so far, it seems the SW updates is a big issue and does not iron out reported issues or takes a long time for Garmin to address. I used Garmin FR 405CX in the past and I was happy with the HW but not SW - I am aware Garmin has come a long way but still wanted to check whether shall I shell out almost 500euros to buy one or would you guys recommend some other option?

Thanks so much in advance

Adil

  • Actually I am glad they are sold out as Garmin has sale on their website for 955 :)

  • I would NOT buy it!!!

I actually owned a 955 Solar for almost 3 months and thank god I was able to return it because of the extended holiday return window. It had soooo many bugs and the lack of proper workout mode was so frustrating!

I bought an Apple Watch Ultra thinking that could be a replacement running watch, but after living with the Apple Watch Ultra for 6 months, I couldn't handle the lack of proper workout support and I bought myself a brand new Forerunner 745 for $249 and I could not be happier!

The 745 is extremely stable at this point and at $249 it's a steal of a running watch!

  • I never looked at 745 actually, but is it not the same firmware that the watch gets like the other ones? I thought the HR readings wrong due to the software?

Actually Fenix 7 is slightly more expensive than 955 currently, how about that one as an option?

  • The 745 is the previous generation of Forerunners. I prefer it because it is stable and has all the training features I need with none of the bugs.

  • If you would have asked me half a year ago I would've said no, but now I would say go for it.

For me most things work as i expect them to, meaning ohr is a hit and miss depending on person and activity. But this has been the case since the 935or 945 for me... for 24/7 monitoring it works perfectly fine, depending how you wear it (yes, it does matter) also for running at least. For me that means wearing high up my arm, which i don't really like so i idee a strap anyway.

The software is now stable and had the functionality i expected and hoped.

Sure, plenty of people with issues (often after a sw update, hard restart often fixes this) but as mentioned. Those will be the ones you hear most on these forums.

For me it's the best device or there atm, with maps, long batterylife, all the features I need. Perfect? No, but hardly anything is.

  • Thank you for the update!

  • Thank you so much - I ordered 955 yesterday since Garmin has birthday sale and the price point was quite appealing so I went for it.

Fingers crossed, it will work for me as expected also as I am a runner and would like to see my running metrics hopefully as accurate as possible.

    Thanks again!

  • Be aware that the price difference between Fenix7 and FR955 comes at a cost. Garmin makes sure that the first have better functionality, faster updates, more functions, etc.

  • Having 955 solar for more than a month and though not perfect, I am generally very happy with the upgrade from 245. Quick review below for those still considering:

    Hits:
#1. Long battery life. Able to charge once a week to last a few GPS runs and pool swims; multiple Garmin pays per day and still end with 30+% batt.
#2. Very accurate GPS (multi-band) tracking for runs.
#3. Big face to see the reading and messages clearly
#4. Have all features that I need, sleep and training tracking

    Misses:
#1. Solar charging as good as useless for me because I seldom stay out in the sun long enough to let it charge via solar (experimented to find out it charge ~1% /hour under direct bright sunlight AND switched off... much slower charging if switched on)
#2. Garmin pay works MOST of the time but will occasionally, once every several transactions, hang and go into ''syncing mode'' and have to restart the watch to use it again.

  • Thank you - went for the FR955 - delivery scheduled for Friday Fingers crossed tone2
