Rock Climbing indoor/outdoor profile useless because of autostart.

Love my 955, but hate it when rock climbing.

In theory the rock climbing profile is great, but in practice it's terrible and that's all because of the autostart function.

When waiting to climb or when on belay, the watch autostarts a route at completely random moments, sitting down, standing up, reasing your hand or just standing still, it all can trigger a new route starting. This is annoying and pulls your focus away from the  climber you are belaying, so it's even dangerous.

Please remove the autostart function, or at least give us a option to turn autostart on/off.

On a minor note, technology is great but is should ask as little attention as possible when you are doing your sporting activities, you should be focusing on the sport and not on the watch. So when you have to confirm the number of falls twice it's one time to many. Set number of falls and then "ok" is enough, does not need another "ok".

But the main issue is the autostart, please fix this.

  • Hi, I only have "Rock Climbing indoor" on my 955. And I don't have any autostart function, neither inside the app/watch or when using it. It happen lot of time that I forgot to start it and I lost the climb Smiley
The only things it has in AUTO is the stop when I reach the floor

  • That's strange, I also use "climbing indoor" and it starts all by it self all the time. I also have the auto-stop, which works very well.

I'm on firmware version 15.19, perhaps it's got something to do with the sensitivity of the barometer.

By the way i've seen the same problem being reported on the fenix-series as well.

  • Climbing with the 955 for some months now and can say that, as far as I can tell, the autostart-problem is mostly related to a very sensitive barometer.

When climbing in a climbinghall on a windy day, it gets triggered by windgusts all the time. These gusts create tiny under/overpressure moments in the hall wich then trigger the (very sensitive) barometer to give a autostart command. On a calm day I seldom get a incorrect autostart (only when standing up to fast after sitting on the ground for some time, I'm 1.95m tall so the 955 thinks I started climbing)

So it's nice to see we have a very sensitive barometer, unfortunately this has it's drawbacks as well.

This, I think, can all be fixed with a simple checkbox  >> autostart on/off.

Just to make sure, I rely like the climbing-profile overall,  wouldn't want to miss it :-)

  • I am also having this issue, I think the easiest fix would be to add a toggle for Auto-transition ON/OFF as @GiGo mentioned.

  • I also have the same issue. I don't believe it has anything to do with a sensitive barometer, as mine triggers regularly indoor climbing. It seems like moving my arm, especially when belaying, triggers it. A toggle to turn off auto start would be very helpful. As it is, it is almost unusable.

  • I have the same thing, standing up or moving my arm for a quick shortening of the rope during belaying, triggers the auto start.

But also when just standing still in the hall during windy days, when the wind gusts beat the hall, the autostart gets triggered. That's why I believe it's a problem with the barometer or it could be that the trigger-ranges are set to tight/small.
