Cannot unlock maps

Same here, reinstalled maps but it didn't solve anything. Contacted Garmin, no solution yet

Mine updated yesterday and the same error occurred, contacted support via online chat and was told to re-install all maps, but hasn’t solved the issue.

This is really annoying. 

I bought the 955 for both the maps and the music. The maps are locked, and the software is stuck on on 13.23 so I cannot install music apps. I've essentially got the functionality of a 255!

Regretting not buying the Coros Pace 2 now.

Happy I read about this (not happy for the users experiencing this of course)... Would normally update to the new map versions as soon as it comes out, but ugh. Garmin really knows how to mess things up.

This topic might have a solution (involves removing the maps from the watch (?) from windows explorer for example)

Mine offered a map update through Garmin Connect this morning, but was failing to update. Watch started fine after unplugging it, so glad I didn’t keep trying to get the update to work. 

I got this message after deleting the RemoteSW folder. Probably there was a map key or something, so I may have invalidated all the maps on the device.

"Cannot unlock maps"

I fixed this:
1. I removed all map files from the watch - no message anymore.
(To be on the safe side, I recommend not deleting anything, but moving it to your PC. The maps are *.img files in the GARMIN folder. I removed Golf and some other suspicious folders as well.).
2. I re-downloaded the maps again using Garmin Express - and viola, no message. SUCCESS!

I reset the device a couple of times, not sure if that was necessary.

I just bought a Forerunner 955 and went to update in Garmin Express and the same thing happened to me.
