Measured distance shorter in all my Trail races

In every 20 - 40 km race, always 2 or 3 km less measured. In a 100 km race, most runners completed 94.3 km; however, my watch only measured 89.4 km. Today, in a 25.0 km run, my watch only measured 20.30 km.

It's frustrating!

My configuration is as follows: smart recording, GPS only, autopause on, 3D Distance / Speed: off (I have tried different 3D configurations, and there are no differences).

I'm used to the autopause being triggered during steep uphill walks, although it wasn't very precise, however, in the end, the distance was not affected.

 any ideas?

  • Try another GPS signal. Maybe “GPS Only” is the problem.

  • Thank you for your response;

    I don't think the reason is the GPS settings. In fact, the track has good accuracy, and in my previous 945, I had the same configuration and didn't have these issues. When I export it to GPX or TCX and import it back as a route in the Garmin Connect app itself, the distance is correct.

    Analyzing the distance by segments, it tends to be in the uphill sections where most of the actual distance is lost. Perhaps it has to do with the "autopause" feature.

  • Continuing with the topic, the following images compare the "original" track with the track exported to GPX and then imported as a route in Garmin Connect. The "original" track measures 18.19 km, while that same track, exported and imported afterwards, measures 21.33 km, which is much closer to reality.

    The same occurs with previous tracks as well.

    In the first 11 kilometers, the watch "eats up" 1 kilometer.

  • This might happen when the watch decides that GPS reception is not good enough and uses wrist movement for distance calculation instead. Therefore, please try using GPS Auto Select instead of GPS only.

  • Remove autopause and set GPS autoselect

  • In my trail running training today of 27.3 km, the route ended up being 27.7 km, which seems correct. I had autopause enabled, but I used the GPS auto mode instead of GPS Only.

    And this makes me so stoked!

    However, the battery was draining at 2.8% per hour, and today it was 4.6% per hour.

    I can live with this battery consumption, and perhaps, considering my long-distance races, I'll give it a try by disabling the autopause function and using the GPS-only option. But  I'm sure I didn't have this issue with my previous F945 with the same setting.

    Anyway, thank you very much for your responses.
