I bought a Garmin 955 and several of my swim teammates use Apple. Apple does so much more for swimmers for half the price. Am I missing something? Apple can count kicks, can define and track different strokes, counts pool distance more accurately.

[Not a swimmer.] Can the Apple Watch count kicks « accurately »? That seems really impressive for a device worn on your wrist which is also flailing around during a swim.
This is impressive when it works well - Apple does this and Garmin does not. And, as I mentioned, Apple can even discern and track which strokes you are doing (back, breaststroke, butterfly, free). Garmin does not.
Pool distance has been 99.99% accurate unless a length gets interrupted (accelerate/decelerate) and errors can be edited. One can use drill mode to manually enter distance kicked. Stroke detection beyond freestyle is not perfect for me, but is accurate for others. It may depend on technique. I can live with it. That said, if you are only swimming, the watch is overkill and you can find many cheaper alternatives. You are paying for extra features.
Thanks Andy275 - very helpful and appreciated. I swim, run and bike. I do not do flip turns when swimming so that might affect tracking of lengths. I called support yesterday to find out where the stroke types are and both on watch and Connect app on phone it is not easy to navigate to and as mentioned above, landscape only on phone. Who would assume that? Apple still seems to track kicking accurately without having to use drill mode. Seems Apple does a lot more automatically. Nothing against Garmin but when I paid $500 for the 955 I assumed it would do as much or more as Apple watches (certainly the cheaper Apple models). Apple seems to do more automatically and with easier interface. Appreciate the thoughtful reply!
