GPS signal and RemoteSW folder

Hi all FR955 runners!

I am new with Garmin and FR955 is mi first Garmin watch :) Everything works fine (sensors, battery, etc..) except the basic function - GPS signal.

Here is few my activities:

On first activity start and end point are actually the same point, but I don't know why first ~25min is not recorded/tracked by GPS, so it looks like start point is somewhere else which is not correct... Also there is few straight lines where I lost GPS signal...

Second activity is terrible... Almost 50% time I haven't GPS signal and there is one big straight line (in the middle of activity)

Of course that I did:

  • updated to 15.19

  • almost every 2-3 days I sync via usb cable and computer

  • sync via phone before activity

  • wait GPS indicator to becomes “green” before activity

  • reset settings 2x times to default settings

  • use "smart" data recording and I have tried with all GPS modes (auto select, GPS only, multi band...)

And my favourite... I read on this forum that deleting RemoteSW folder (and it's content) can help for this situation... And it helped, but only for period of 5-7 days. After some period, I have the same problem...

I noticed that after re-creating RemoteSW folder I always have 006D856710.GCD file. But sometimes also CPE.bin and GPE.bin is created, but sometimes not... Does all of you have these files inside RemoteSW folder?

Also one day was interesting - after two good activity (run+walk) I connect to usb cable to see what is inside RemoteSW folder, and gues what - watch didn't re-create this folder! But GPS was working ok (near 1.5 hours in total).

So, I can't simply find a patter why watch is losing GPS signal......

What can I do? Does anyone have advice?

  • Why are you using smart data upload instead of uploading every second?

  • I have tried few times but it haven’t impact on GPS signal. Behaviour was the same. I can try again…

  • This is what I would suggest

    - GPS mode - use All + Multi Band

    - Record every second

    - After GPS indicator becomes green, stay still for another 1/2 to 1 min with the watch towards the sky to allow more satellites to be acquired. You can also add a Map data screen in your activity and check that your position is correct before you start

    - During your activity, it always helps to have your watch face the sky for best signal, especially in places with lots of cover around

  • Every second recording is not solution. With this option gps on my fr955 breaking every time. So I'm useing smart data and dont have problems. Actually options of data recording is not the point. Its just one of many thoughts what can helps with problems like that one.

  • 1. Ok

    2. Not sure about "every second". I tried this but it didn't help

    3. Yes, good tip for waiting after becomes green.

"You can also add a Map data screen in your activity and check that your position is correct before you start"

Exactly, with Map data screen and with pace on default data screen I know during the activity is my GPS still tracking me or not. This two pictures above was run with loaded course.

    4. :) Maybe 955 is not as premium as fenix, but I think that must be very precise watch

  • @All: Could someone please confirm to me which files do you have in RemoteSW folder?  Just *.GDC? Or CPE/GPE also?

  • FWIW, I have the 965 now and looked and only the .GCD is in the Remote Folder.

Had the 955 before and looked at my last device backup and that actually had no file in there. (but that is from March so maybe the FW at that time worked differently)

I have mine set to Smart recording and Multiband . i have never had any issues with my 955 nor the 965 as regards GPS recording.

Read the part about GPS accuracy.

About losing GPS signal, are you walking or running? Is it in areas with a lot of surrounding cover?

  • I do both activity - walking and running. And I run two trail running 100km+ away from my hometown.

I had period of 7-10 days with good GPS signal at my hometown at the beginning of june. And now last 2 days (after opening this thread :)) GPS is ok.

But other days it was terrible... (I am using this watch for the past two months)

Near my home is football field, and I had problem also on football field (open sky, without clouds)

This two printscreens from the first post was mentioned two trail runs. In both races I arrived ~2 hours earlier before start race, and of course I tried to: sync with phone, turn on/off watch, and of course I wait GPS signal to becomes green. And it was green, but during the race I probably lost signal few times, and you see result on printscreens...
