Forerunner 955 counting steps while cycling

Rode 13 miles this morning, Garmin Forerunner 955 counted 5000 steps during that 1 hour period I was on my bike. There is no way to manually remove the step counter during that time in Connect (only to change the goal), there should be a way to manually delete sections in the step counter.

  • Same happening with me.

If anything the dev team should be looking at this either as a bug or an error. Surely it's simple enough to code it so the step count stops as soon as you're in a non walk/hike activity ? I don't mind losing the few steps I might take while out mountain biking, but it frustrates the *** out of me when I get massive step counts while my legs are frantically spinning pedals. I struggle to understand how the two dynamics can get confused ...

Fingers crossed this gets a look in. Definitely about time !

  • I have the same issue using 16.17. The ride was recorded using Garmin EDGE computer. The watch was sitting idle on my wrist.

  • It doesn't count steps if you turn on cycling activity.

  • You are probably right but still steps estimation algorithms needs more work. I never had this issue with Apple watch in the exact same scenario. Not a real issue for me. Just an observation.

  • Cycling (as in road) ? Maybe. But Unfortunately definitely not the case with MTB on my 955 still. Got about 3500 steps in again only yesterday ...

I ignore it nowadays. Given up on a number of bugs that haven't been resolved in the year or so I've had this unit.

  • Yes, road cycling. I believe it is especially true when out of the saddle.

  • I come from 245, then 255 and now 955.
All of them count steps when I'm cooking food on the stove. In that moment when I'm stirring food in a pan.
