15.19 Bluetooth on in airplane mode

As a user, I want to be sure that in airplane mode all wireless modules in the watch are really turned off.
That means REALLY OFF, not that just some icon changed color and the underlying hw module is still on.

There's a bug with the airplane mode. Here are the steps:

1. Play some music
2. Turn on airplane mode (hold LIGHT button and tap the airplane icon)
3. Return back (press BACK button)
4. Tap Play icon
5. Select your headphones - it says "Airplane mode enabled"
6. The music is playing again
7. Check the airplane mode is on (hold LIGHT button)
8. Return back to the player (press BACK button)
9. Return back to home screen (press BACK button)
10. Stop the music (hold DOWN button) - you can't "Airplane mode enabled"!

  • Take a look at the forum and you see that this is not a bug.

Airplane mode/flight mode is ONLY WIFI being turned off.

This is probably due to the FAA rules, also notice that rules regarding Wifi during take-off and landing are removed later this year.

your example is normal behavier for all newer garmin watches and is not considered as a bug.

  • I thought it's a standard behavior that you can turn off wireless devices.

You say the airplane mode isn't about Bluetooth.

Why it stops the music playing over Bluetooth and disconnect from phone then?

Why the music cannot be stopped when it was started in the airplane mode?

You consider them as features? I don't.

    >This is probably due to the FAA rules

I don't think the FAA mandates NOT to STOP Bluetooth or any other wireless module. That would be sad.

WIFI has a dedicated menu item where you can stop it, while Bluetooth does not. I see this as a problem because users can't turn off Bluetooth when not using it, while they can do it with WIFI regardless of airplane mode.

Bluetooth menu item is missing. The only possibility to turn off Bluetooth is the airplane mode (if ever).

If you want to keep Bluetooth always on, that's your choice and that's perfectly fine!, but others don't have a choice.

The way it works on my phone is that it has WIFI, Bluetooth, GSM modules and when I tap the airplane mode icon it turns them all off. When I turn off airplane mode, everything goes back to its original state. And I can also turn the Bluetooth on in the airplane mode. Nobody says that it shouldn't be possible.

I would expect two ways how it can work:

    1.
     * Airplane mode will turn off all wireless modules. <-- It stops the music and disconnect phone now (not sure if it really stops the Bluetooth now, but it seems it does).
     * Bluetooth can be turned on if needed,   <- this isn't possible, there's no menu item to enable/disable Bluetooth
     * The "apps" can turn Bluetooth on automatically.  <-- this seems to be working now, at least the music can be played in the airplane mode.
     * The music can be stopped in the airplane mode, if it was possible to start it. <--- this doesn't work
     * When the airplane mode is enabled again, it can return to the previous configuration of the wireless modules. So if WIFI was enabled, it would enable it, if Bluetooth was, it would enable it. <--- this probably doesn't work now, but it's nice to have

    2.
       * Airplane mode is just about WIFI as you say, then:
       * It shouldn't stop the music playing over Bluetooth and disconnect the phone  <-- This doesn't work, the music is stopped and it disconnects the phone
       * It should allow you to stop playing music in airplane mode <-- This doesn't work now! You can't stop it.
       * Bluetooth cannot then be deactivated at all. <-- This is not possible now.

I don't like the point 2 and I think that's a bug if I am not able to stop the music. Or if was decided that airplane is about WIFI only and turns off music and disconnects from the phone. That doesn't make sense.

  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ANT communications should all be disabled when Airplane mode is turned on. You do not have the option to turn Bluetooth on if Airplane mode is enabled. If you connect your headphones to your watch, play a song, and then enable Airplane mode- your music doesn't stop? Your music should immediately stop, and your headphones should be disconnected.

  • > Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and ANT communications should all be disabled when Airplane mode is turned on
They are, but you can then connect to bluetooth headphones in airplane mode and listen to music in the mode, so bluetooth can be turned on.

    > your music doesn't stop?
It stops, but you can start it again in the airplane mode (see the steps 3, 4, 5, 6) and you can't stop it by holding Down button, because it shows "Airplane mode enabled" instead of the music player. You can turn off the airplane mode and stop the music.

  • Are you able to capture these steps on video? I am unable to reproduce on my 955.

If you submit the video HERE using your Forum's email address, I can view it. Just let me know when it's submitted.

  • Certainly there is a problem with Airplane mode. Please check the problem I have. Garmin service in my country exchanged the watch, blamed the MIUI OS the issue remained. It happens when the watch is not connected to a phone.

Waited patiently for the firmware 15.19 the issue remained, not fixed after all my posts.

I always put the watch in the airplane mode after the activity when bluetoth or ANT+ sensors (HRM, Cadence) or radar (Varia RTL515) was connected, the battery drains till the restart (15 seconds Light button press and hold).

Just to mention that I turn off all the sensors to OFF before the Airplane mode.

The battery doesn't drain if the watch after the activity is not put into Airplane mode.

  • Hi - I have also given an example on this - even today.

    1) Put the 955 into airplane mode
    2) Check with your mobile that Forerunner 955 is not connected
    3) Press Light+ and choose Running (You don't have to start the acitivty) and bluetooth is instantly turned on - you can see that on your phone (Forerunner 955 connected) and Garmin Connect also says connected.
    4) If you press the BACK-button bluetooth stays on on the watch.

I cannot fully remember if it was Garmin-zac or Garmin-Kevin that stated that this is on purpose as bluetooth/ant+ is shortrange and is not linked to the airplane/flightmode rules.

You can go more than 3 years back in comments to see that it has been like this for several years.

For Fenix 5+ I called the both Danish but also English garmin support and was told the same. It is not a bug but on purpose. I believe that 245, 255, 945, 955, 965 and most fenix versions have this behavier also. Forerunner 745 apparantly not but that must be because of "old base firmware".

On a side note Apple Watch have the same "configuration. Airplane-mode means turning off cell and and wifi-only. Bluetooth stays on.

On a second side note - FAA announced that all airplane aviation organisations have agreeded that wifi-no longer needs to be disabled during take-off and landing later this year - cannot renember the actual date.

  • Thank you for the video, pw. Are you updated to sw 15.19? If not, please update and let me know if this persists.

, since you are experiencing something different with Airplane mode- please either start a new thread to see if other users are experiencing excess battery drain, or wait for the Product Support agent to respond to your most recent email.

  • Thanks for answering. I notified the support about the issue and how I found out when the watch doesn't drain (if you leave it out of Airplane mode after the activity), but still haven't received a reply, for about a week now.

I asked what is the best way (link possibly) to submit this bug.
