Still the same bugs (Bluetooth, Flight mode) in version 15.19

The watch will still switch itself out of flight mode once an activity has been selected but not yet started.
When leaving the activity that has not yet started, flight mode is still optically switched on, but internally the watch is completely in transmission mode. Bluetooth on.
I've been waiting for a solution for half a year, support knows about it, but they don't care about it!
What's that @Garmin?

Steven

  • Airplane mode or Flight mode does not turn off Bluetooth  - it only turns of Wifi and as such is not considered as a bug. This Apples to most garmin watches.

  • Sorry but that is incorrect. From 955 manual -

Airplane mode - Select to enable or disable airplane mode to turn off all wireless communications.

  • Regardless of the manuel

The Garmin definition of the word wireless is WIFI (Simply because that is "long-range communication".

Bluetooth / ANT+ is not and there not part of flight mode.

This have been discuessed in many groups and the answer is always the same. wireless is WI-FI only.

  • Also Read this:

Change of flight mode definition is due to the changed FAA rules.

read the section Electronics On Board.

    https://www.faa.gov/travelers/fly_safe/information )

  • Why don't you try it out youself? Turn on airplane mode on your 955. Your watch will display a notice "Airplane mode disables all wireless communications (Bluettooth, Wifi, ANT)". With airplane mode on,check your mobile Garmin Connect , you will see that it is not connected to your watch.

  • Hello

I have tried it on several watches and it works in the same way (just as intended).

If you read the FAA rules then WI-FI only is considered as real "airplane mode" - which Garmin follows.

This also means that  if you start an activity/training, then bluetooth / Ant+ is turned on in those cases where any of the settings for that training-type/activity is supposed to use a Bluetooth Device or Ant+ Device. When the activity/traning is finished then bluetooth/ Ant+ still will be turned on.

Later this year FAA en general with most airplanes companies in the world will no longer ask people to turn on Airplane/Flight-mode.

In most cases the main reason for turning a device into Airplane mode is to preservce battery, but with the latest chips in the watchs you hardly use any battery at all, which is why this option in longer terns probably are going to be removed.

If you really want to turn everything commucation wise off, then you have to use a watch like the Tactix which have a Stealth Mode.

Stealth mode is useful in secure areas where wireless communication is prohibited.

Honestly what is the real problem here? Battery saving setting or that it does not work as you would expect?

  • We want to have a button that kills all wireless radiation.

    1. to save power / battery
    2. to not interfere with the body during sleep
    3. to be invisible to others - Garmin doesn't offer separate bluetooth/ant control and discoverability :-( as I wrote here

  • Just to answer your comments.

Firstly I do not thing that there is a "We want" but more a "You want" and that is for several reasons:

    1) Bluetooth and Ant+ does not use much power. (Ant uses 0,001 watt and bluetooth Low energy uses 0,5 watt. With at battery having 345 mAh it means that you can have these two turned on for 345.000 hours (!!!!)

2)Interfere with your body. Not sure what you mean here. If you are worried about your body then take off the watch. And if you are "afraid" of signals, then download an app like LightBlue and you can see how much is just around you. The only solution to this is to move to the outbank of Alaska where there are no signals at all.

    3) Only Garmin Tactix offers Stealth mode. No other watch offer this kind of offline mode, and for what purpose do you want to turn everything off? (Honestly just Power off the device.

I do agree though on the matter of the device name. It is quite annoying that you cannot change the name. Especially if you have more than one of the same device (which probably often happens if your spouse is also a trainiac).

  • I just tried this on a 955 and 745

    - Turn on Airplane mode

    - Start an activity

    - Check connectivity on mobile

    745 stays disconnected.

955 gets connected after starting the activity. The "sync" control on the watch is disabled, stating that "Airplane Mode Enabled". But from the phone, you can sync. This is clearly a bug as described by the OP.

  • As commented on other questions/comments that Bluetooth/Ant+ is turned on automatically when activity is started. Even on an older Fenix 5+

I dont have an 745 leaving around me right now, so I cannot test it. But I do have a 955 with me, and I have just tested it. again.
The for not behaving the same way as 955 could be a FW issue as the FW is older.

    1) Holding the Light button and setting Airplane/Flight mode to On
    2) Open the connect app - Cannot connect to Watch as bluetooth is turn off at the watch.
    3) On the Watch, Clicking Start, Selecting Acitivity Run (Bluetooth is instantly turned on - I can see that on my phone). If I cancel the start of the activity Bluetooth stays on (I can see that on my phone), and On the watch it is still in Airplane mode and WIFI is not working.

But again, this is how it is supposed to work - as airplane mod is supposed to be a WI-FI issue only.

955 is on firmware 15.19 and the phone is an Iphone. Haven't tested on an android phone.
