Garmin connect creating custom training plan issues

I've used some garmin plans before for 10k - these plans would automatically populate my entire training for 8 weeks! I thought this was great as it kept me away from doing this manually.

I am changing up my training and want to create my own plans. So currently my first 6 weeks look like I run 6 times a week , the variation factor being distance/heart rate.

I would like to populate may be upto 2 weeks in advance in a go.

This is my approach been so far :

I've tried to set this up by going to Training & Planning -> Workout. I create a workout, but the issue I guess here is it applies this to a single activity only! So if i am running 5 miles on Monday and 7 on tuesday , I cannot drag drop the same work out to the calendar. As any edits to one automatically updates to all other instances. Is there a way around this apart form creating 14 workouts (copying etc) and dragging them over?

The second issue i am facing is 955 is being a bit strange. Like today , instead of picking up my workout - it suggested a workout by garmin , and i could not find mine under the watch. So is there a way to force the watch to not recommend me something but just use what i've put in the calendar.

Both of these did not occur while using a coaching plan.

Cheers!

  • When I’m populating my calendar with a training plan I have to make dozens of workouts to account for all the different combinations of distances and workout structures. I don’t know of an easier way.

For the second point, if you add a workout to your calendar you have to sync your watch with Connect otherwise the watch will just suggest a daily workout.

  • Sigh , i was afraid that was the case. Regarding the second point - i should have added , early morning i did get a flash of the right custom workout , but as soon as i head out in the afternoon , it was missing. I am guessing the watch glitched in some way , I'll try this again. Thanks for your help. Atleast now i know i there is no better way to do what i need to.

  • From what i've experienced - if you drop the same workout to multiple days on your calendar, say Tuesday and Thursday, and execute the run on Tuesday, come Thursday the activity won't automatically pop up as Garmin has already marked it as completed.   It's still there on your calendar of course so you can select it from there, bit annoying that you have to do that though.

I end up only scheduling a week ahead, and if I have multiple days of the same activity - like 3 easy runs a week - I add each of those the day before (or on the day itself) it doesn't take long to do.

I think the Garmin coach plans must define each activity as a completely seperate workout, that way they can drop the whole lot in at once.  Unfortunately we can't do that without a whole lot of work, and it's not actually a "training plan" anyway, just a set of workouts.  There's possibly a way to write our own fit files to do this.

  • Excellent hint! Pretty sure i had this , workout A on monday , after finishing it i updated the same workout and added it to tuesday.  FWIW i think this should be fixed by garmin , but i am not holding my breath.
