Running workout suggestion

My 955 watch suggests a 4.35km pace threshold run but it ends up being a zone 3 run, not 4 then after, watch says the training benefit was that it was a recovery run and further insults you by saying not enough high aerobic

I like the idea of workout training but is the above is normal behaviour

  • The daily workout suggestions you get are only as good as the information Garmin has to work with. If your VO2 max is not correct due to lack of workout data, incorrect user info (age, weight, etc.) or your heart rate zones are not set correctly, the suggestions will either be too fast or too slow.

If you have a chest strap heart monitor I highly recommend using it to get your lactate threshold heart rate and pace. Once your heart rate zones are based on that your workout suggestions should be very close to your abilities. If you have no chest strap, having your zones based on % of HRR (heart rate reserve) will be the next best thing - this uses your resting heart rate and max heart rate to create the zones. Garmin's default setting is % of MHR (max heart rate) and this is nowhere close to correct for the vast majority of people.

I also recommend using heart rate for your target during workouts instead of pace - easier to maintain a consistent level of effort over varying terrain (in my opinion).

  • I have a question for a while... How do you set your HR zones properly? Is it automatic?

  • In the Garmin Connect App you select Garmin Devices-Forerunner 955-User Profile-Heart Rate & Power Zones-Heart Rate. From there you can decide if it autodetects your max heart rate or if you manually enter it, and under Zones you can select what your zones are based on and what percentages you'd like it to use. Plenty of articles online about heart rate zones if you're interested, but the lactate threshold numbers seem to be the most accurate.

And it will automatically set up your zones based on percentage of max heart rate unless you tell it otherwise.
