Suggested workout pace is slower than my normal pace.

Suggested workout pace is slower than my normal pace. I have been using the 955 for a couple of months. My typical pace is 8:15-8:30/mile. Every suggested workout I get is at a 10:00/mile pace. I thought the watch would learn and adjust to my level after I’d used it for awhile but this doesn’t seem to be the case for suggested workouts.  Any ideas as to why this is or how it can be adjusted? Thanks

  • Exact the same worries here. I scheduled half marathon in 1h45. That means about 5 minutes/km. But my training suggestions are 90% of the distance at 6:20/km. In two weeks I have the race, and I am full of questions now. I think it has to do with the VO2max I build up last year in my training for a full marathon, which was 4 weeks ago. I see race prediction for half marathon at 1h40 on the watch, so it might think I am on a better level than needed for the 1h45 goal, and therefore slows me down in training.

  • Situation now is that I only train at 6:20/km (with max distance of 10km, but mostly about 7/8km), while I have to run 5:00/km for 21 km!

  • Are your heart rate zones set correctly? Is your max HR set to automatically update? Have you done a lactate threshold test (or received a lactate threshold result during normal activities?). A large percentage of your workouts are probably going to be Base runs - they are going to suggest a pace they think you can run that will keep your heart rate in Zone 2 (Easy). If the max hr, and hr zones are set incorrectly it will give you bad pace suggestions. The other option is to change the settings to suggest a heart rate range instead of a pace range (this also assumes you have your hr zones set up correctly), but I've found this to be a better metric so I can adjust my pace for hills and heat and other factors.

  • Thanks for the tip. I’ll give it a try.

  • I set HR manually, because there are a few issues unsolved with the automatic measurements. SUre, Beta has solved it but I wait for the official update. My max HR is set to 192. With all my manual scheduled trainings for the marathon that seems a good value. But since I use daily suggestions for half marathon in 1h45, it is terrible. I have to run 5min/km next week (race), but most of the times I get base training @6m20, and once a week tempo @5m20. Never long run @5m00. I have no convidence in this way of training.

Still, my estimated race time is 1h31 1h41 says Garmin. I can only think of my high VO2Max as a result of 1 year marathon training, which keeps my calculation for half a marathon at that level, and which keeps my training effort so low because my predicted race time is still faster than my scheduled race time. But with this level of training for weeks now, I bet my race pace is gone, and it will be more a 2hour run.
