Solar charging with nearly fully charged watch?

this has problem existed before, but i only recently became aware of solar charging being very limited when the watch is almost fully charged.

for example, when the watch is at 98% battery level, a very bright full sun only shows a charge at about 20% where it normally (under lower battery level conditions) it would be pegged at 100%.

i'm assuming this perhaps some safety mechanism to prevent overcharge, yet, it is still surprising since i would think that a full sun would amount to what should be a "trickle charge" relative to plugging the phone into the standard wall/USB charger.

  • From web GC Solar intensity help

If I read it correctly the solar intensity should reflect the current conditions but the charging should be disabled for an almost full battery.

  • good find. however, i don't see the green status on my solar intensity data plot. it shows just the orange dot and lower than expected levels. yet, i'm guessing that must be what is happening. yesterday, when i was down closer to 90%, i was seeing full on 100% solar intensity.

  • Yesterday when the battery was about 68% there were periods where it showed (on the watch face) 150%. Today when the watch was at 99%, in similar circumstances I was seeing a max of 8%.

  • My experience is similar. I rarely charge my watch to >80% when I plug it in. This time, I charged to 100% for a trip. When the watch was between 95-100% state of charge, solar intensity seemed restricted to <20%, even with maximum sunlight on the face. Today, the charge is <95%, and the solar intensity level is what I would expect (>100% in full sun). This must have been overcharge protection or something similar. The graph for intensity yesterday has no indication of restricted charging.
