965 vs 955? Advice Wanted

I'm trying to decide between the Forerunner 955 and 965. I've watched all the videos and the only differences seem to be a slightly larger display, longer battery life, and their new operating system. I've also seen a good amount of people complaining about the 955 not receiving necessary updates.

I am also worried that the beveled screen on the 965 may be more prone to damage as I will be using this watch for mountain biking and motocross.

If anyone has any advice, please feel free to educate me. The $100 difference is not a deal breaker.

  • Sure, I know, but these comparisons mainly say that the FR 955 is a plastic Fenix 7. I'm just concerned about the size and weight of the Fenix. Of course the software is supposed to be better, but the Fenix costs about ~200 € more. So, yeah... :D

  • i think DesFit and ChaseSummit answer that question (or try to) in great detail. hardware wise, the 955 is indeed a plastic Fenix which makes it a winner to me because i don't think i would want to run with as heavy a watch as the F7/Epix2. i don't have to dress formally for work, so the FR watches have always played nice with my casual dress and i have never had a problem with durability even though i'm hard on watches. i do put a tempered glass protector on my FR watches (735XT, 935, 945LTE, 955) and they have served me well.

software wise...there are a few things that the 955 doesn't do which the F7 does including more advanced battery management settings, a better maps experience (although that has currently been evened out by some new bugs introduced in recent firmwares to the F7/Epix2) and a  few other activities.  but even price not accounted for, i'm glad to have the 955 Solar (and am still lustfully looking at the 965) due to it's lightness. also, it should be noted that the 965 is the thinnest of the bunch, followed by the 955 and then the F7. so another thing going for the 9X5 are their slightly thinner profile.

the biggest thing: which is a Garmin issue is that there are separate software teams for each device. this is so nonsensical and has been discussed here at length.

  • Thanks for your detailed answer!

  • If it can help you, from my slightly biased view because I like the 955 more, what they say may be true, in fact when I tried it the Fenix 7 seemed too heavy and large for my personal taste. Yes, the 955 looks more "plastic" and "cheap" but it is still tough enough for all activities and very light for everyday use. It might also look a little sportier, but I like it and I don't have a problem with it. Then with those 200 you can use them for something else :)
I think the best thing is that you take both manuals of the device and see what functions you are interested in or what you would use the most because sometimes we buy devices that far exceed our usage needs.

  • Thanks for your reply and your suggestions, I'll do so! :)

  • So after I took both manuals, here is my very little comparison:
FR 955 vs Fenix 7 SS:
    - nearly no differences in features. Sure, the sw of the F7 is supposed to be more polished (I don't get why the 955 can't get the battery manager options...), but aside of that, nearly nothing.
    - Sure, the FR 955 is all-plastic, but it's also lighter.
    - The 955's screen should be better than the F7 SS because of the Sapphire glass.

In my use case (mainly playing tennis, sometimes running, walking, hiking), I guess you're right, that it's perhaps better to simply save the 200 bucks. Espacially the weight is the main pro for the FR 955 I guess.

It's not so easy to compare the FR955 vs the 965. It's mainly AMOLED vs MIP and titanium bezel vs. plastic one. But still, the 965 is much more pricier (at least for now) and besides, it has no extra features to offer. In direct sunlight at summer on the tennis court, the MIP also might have advantages, I guess.

Besides all that, I don't have any BIG issues with the 955. Sure, there are some bugs here and there, but all in all, the watch works well for me. So I guess, it's still good to go. Hopefully no more FOMO for me Smiley

  • Time and date are the only real accurate data it feeds you

Let me just point out that time is not accurate. Based on other Garmin watches, even if you're connected to your phone 24/7 Garmin doesn't sync time precisely.

  • That is simply not true. The time is always accurate to the second on the FR955.

  • Are you saying your FR955 syncs time with your phone and it's always accurate to the second?
