Forerunner 955 Series Software Version 14.20 problems

at the beginning of March, the 955 solar watch was updated to version 14.20. since then the battery discharges for 4-5 days, with the same mode of use, and the connection with the phone is lost very often.
before this software version, the battery lasted 7-8 days with 3-4 sports applications per week.
Does anyone else have similar problems ? Thks.

  • Same here, I had the problem of battery drain much earlier. The battery in stand-by (no activities) drains more than 10% per day. (5% at night, 8h). This is double time like my Forerunner 945. I had contact with Garmin and they estimate its the tempe sensor I use, but its not. I guess its the "standard" stand-by of the watch, don't know why... This needs to be solved...

  • before this update the battery was discharging a maximum 10% every day. Now 20% in stand-by(no activities).
I use the 955 with the same settings.Garmin ruined the watch with this update...
Hope they solve it quickly with an update
  • After each update the watch needs to be power cycled to prevent this drain

  • I'm having a battery drain issue: it went from 28% to 14% overnight. FW 14.20 here. I'm so undescribably disappointed with this watch... All the way since day 1 nothing but issues.

  • Have you restarted the watch?

I also had a drain with my brand new FR955, 15% over night. I restarted it, and guess what: The drain stopped. Since then around 10% for a whole day, including config (it’s new…) and some activities outdoors.

  • My drain woes continue... After every activity, when connected to (at least HRM) Polar H7, then turned off sensor and watch put into airplane mode...it drains couple of percent per hour...till restart. That all is without connected phone...on my second FR955 Solar. Cannot wait for 15 firmware release to test and return the watch if not fixed. Almost one freaking year + other bugs (most fixed in the upcoming fw). I didn't get the answer if others have this kind of drain on version 15, no replies.

  • Sorry to hear that. Of course I understand your frustration.

But I had FR245 for over two years, FR255 for half a year and now the FR955 new. In that time, surely a dozen firmware updates were delivered to the watches. And with every single firmware, there were reports about battery drain here in the forums. In all that time, I never experienced it - was the first time now.
It is simply not plausible, that the battery drain is connected to a certain firmware (or will be fixed by one).

Have you tried a soft reset? (No data will be lost)
Connect the watch with cable to a PC/Mac with Garmin Express.
    Sync it.
Then press the light/power button (top left) for around 15 seconds, until it shuts down.
It will then restart, if not press the button to start it.
    Let it reboot and sync.

It was reported to help often.

  • Well, good luck returning it. At the moment I don't think the FR955 has ever lived up to the (advertised) expectations, with major issues such as constant battery drain (this is most likely not due to any specific firmware) or the HR-sensor, which is completely useless. They''d argue whatever to NOT accept a return and give a refund (or a new watch).

  • Of course. I do that after every activity when I use any sensor, mostly bluetooth HRM, because without it, the watch would be empty in couple of hours/same day.

This is the replaced watch with the same behavior as the 9 months older/returned one. I asked the service to fix drain problem or money refund. They sent a new watch and blamed Chinese MIUI OS for battery drain. Drain happens without phone connected. Since then, no stable firmware was released.

  • I am finally satisfied with the  beta fw 15.11. It should be released as normal fw soon. Many annoying bugs fixed, no new bugs introduced, the watch now acts as expected.

Regarding battery drain, it hepled me (in addition to restarting the watch by holding LIGHT for 15s) to completely delete the Connect app and unpair watch on my Android and reinstall back. You will lose the main screen arrangement, customized text and call responses and you will need to enable all phone permissions again, but I think it is worth it.

If you experience battery drain even without phone connected, then I have no idea, maybe warranty claim is to be considered.

My battery can last normally around 9-12 days with no GPS activity, but some playing around with the watch and like 2-3 days with all-day GPS on.

Recently I was dowhill skiing and during the day, I had GPS multiband on for approx. 8h, including the lunch break and the battery drain was 40%, so it perfectly matches the official specifications - 20 hours on multiband.
