Training readiness, morning report, health snapshot - your experience

How useful do you find the 'new' (as compared to 945) training/health metrics on 955 (or any other garmin watch that supports these). A bit of background , I am a satisfied owner of Garmin 945 (but the screen has started delaminating, will contact Garmin about this).  The 945 does all that I need. When purchasing it I was excited about all the training/ health metrics that the watch offered back then. But over time, I have realized that I have not much use for Training status and other metrics that 945 offers. With 955 Garmin developed these further - an on paper at least, these new consolidated metrics look more useful and actionable. But what has been your experience with these?  Are they an improvement over 945 or just ... meh...not essential at all.

  • Useless for me, many bugs that affect various metrics, let's see if they fix it.

  • i would say they are moderately interesting. they don't drive my training but they give me another opinion/data point.

the upgrades over the 945 would be the multi-band GPS and better instantaneous pace, a better contrast and backlit MIPS display, and a touch enabled map interface (not without its problems but this is where touch is very helpful)

  • I had a 745 before my 955

In my view, they are "nice to have" to look at but in the end they mostly corroborate how one feels.

Morning report is a nice summary way of looking at things.

Health Snapshot - Used it one just for fun to see what it showed. Sort of like ECG on an Apple Watch ..Oh great let me try it for fun , never used it again

I look at the metrics to see if they tie in to how I feel. In my case I have found them to quite accurately portray that. When the HRV has dipped , it ties in to when I had some virus etc.

Of course as with so many things we have today we can quite easily manage without them - often to our benefit actually.

The biggest change to me from earlier watches was the ability to set up activity data screens on the app...but again that happens fairly irregularly , but it is definitely nicer, and the 955 has a bigger screen also.

  • Thanks a lot for your answer.  I use my 945 a lot for navigation when hiking and biking. And generally find it excellent,  but  on the occasions where I need the zoom function, doing it via buttons is a kludge.  touchscreen on 955 should be better for this ( but I surmise there are bugs.. as expected)

  • most of the bugs have been resolved and it is definitely a much more pleasant to use interface than the 945/945LTE with the buttons. also, the processor is much faster so the screen is significantly more responsive while panning and zooming.

  • Overall mainly a confirmation of what you now and feel, but nice to have a look at all factors and stats...

Doesn't "guide" me in any way but always take a look at the morning report when waking up and if training readiness is very high or low I like to see the reasons for it.

  • I find Training Readiness to be quite useful. Yes, there’s an amount you can “feel” but if you’re like me, it can be hard to listen to your body and I find myself often wanting to push forward with training (or an unstructured hard ride) anyway. So having that score quantify things really helps me. If it’s in the red, I generally push my workout and take a recovery day. If it’s yellow I might ease up the intensity of the workout. And if it’s green or blue we’re good to go! Additionally I use the acute load a LOT in order to not overtrain, since I don’t have a personal coach but lots of eagerness it’s all too easy to overdo it.

  • All very useful but unfortunately only on paper because there are so many bugs that the results are inconsistent.

  • I’ve been using this watch for six months and the results have been incredibly consistent. This forum is an echo chamber for people with issues, it represents a small (but vocal) minority.

  • Overnight HRV has led me to make better life choices. For that alone, personally, it has been priceless.
