Wrist hr not working outside an activity

I usually use a strap and don’t rely on the wrist hr when running

few months ago I ran without the strap just to see how good the wrist hr was in the 955 and it felt accurate enough

today I warmed up for 5 minutes on a rowing machine without starting an activity on the watch. At the end of my 5 minutes the watch face kept saying 75bpm. It was snug in the wrist and when I stopped I kept watching it while counting my heart beats.
I was at about 150 and the watch kept showing 75

has anybody experienced this? Again, I had not started an activity

For the rest of the time in the gym I kept an eye on it and it would show maybe 92. Counting I was at 135 or 140 usually.  As a test I started an indoor activity and quickly the hr rose to 140. The sensor clearly works

now, I don’t expect (and don’t want) the sensor to monitor my hr super frequently when not in an activity, because it obviously drains the battery faster. But  how often does it sample?

Isn’t 5 minutes on a rowing machine enough to get another sample and notice that I am not at 75bpm anymore? And I am ignoring the fact that I kept lifting weights for well longer than that and it barely changed

Was it always like this? Or are these changes to extend the battery life? (And in that case, the hr out of an activity is good only to monitor sleep, because it won’t pick up the changes if I go on a walk for example)

 I am on 14.20

  • That's because when you start an activity the watch uses more power (stronger light in the diodes) to be able to read your HR and do it continuosly. When it is in smartwatch mode it take spot readings like once every 5 seconds and no extra power to the LEDs.

  • that's not it, if it measures every 5 seconds, there should be plenty of time in the 5 minutes of my rowing activity to detect that it's not 75bpm anymore

I am not sure it is was stuck somehow. Today the indicator on the watch face is working better it seems. If I am sitting it shows 60ish (realistic) and as soon as I stand and walk around a bit it climbs up to 80ish. So something wrong was happening yesterday.

Looking at the HR widget, yesteday didn't show anything higher than more or less 80 for the entire time I was working out at they gym

I'll keep paying attention. Even if this is not the important part of the watch hr monitoring, something was going on
