14.17/14.20: state of touch interface for Maps for 955

i hope i can open a discussion here because i feel ignorant as to what we can currently do using touch on the maps for the 955.

based on my discussions, i'm puzzled about several things:

  • DCrainmaker suggested that the double-tap to zoom functionality was added to the 955 this autumn, yet if it was, then i've all along misinterpreted what it was supposed to do. when i'm using maps on my 955 now, a single tap will bring up the +/- zoom buttons. i had long assumed that a double tap would zoom in (ie, +) but a double tap does nothing for me and my watch.
  • i had also thought that if i did a long press, i should bring up the menu which would allow me to navigate to a point on the map. i thought that had finally been fixed in the recent firmwares, but i may have misunderstood what had been fixed and not in recent iterations. my current question is more fundamental: should anything happen if i "long press" on the screen a a cursor location?

thanks in advance for anyone willing to clarify what is possible and not possible right now with maps.

(my +/- zoom buttons do work and dragging to zoom work but i'm a bit lost on any other functionality)

  • 1. Double tap isn't doing anything

    2. Long press start brings up a menu, long press screen doesn't do anything.

At least, that's my experiences and understanding

  • thanks for your summary. i was beginning to wonder if somehow my watch was malfunctioning especially with regard to the double tap and long press on the screen. i don't however get anything with a long press on the start button so i may have to play with that. i remember using that as a hotkey previously to do a screenshot (to help garmin debug prior issues) and i think i set it to off recently. (just checked: i assume i should set it to "navigation" to get something useful?)

: can you confirm what you are getting if you double tap your 955 and what firmware you are running? do you get anything doing a long press on the screen?

  • Yeah, sorry, I think there's some misunderstanding. When I was talking tap to zoom, I was meaning to activate the map screen for touch.

Doing a double-tap on neither the FR965 or FR955 once the screen is activated does anything. No extra zooming. You can still then tap the +/- options on the screen to keep zooming, but that's not just tapping anywhere on the screen. Apologies.

And to be clear, double-tapping doesn't seem to do anything zoom-wise on the Outdoor units either. Just checking my wife's Fenix 7s - nothing happens when I double-tap or long-hold, doesn't cause a zoom.

  • I think I was thinking mainly of when going into the navigation sub options (such as selecting a location on map). In general map overview I don't think it does anything no.. (For example on the map screen when running)

  • thanks for confirming and clarifying.

so, from what i can guess based on some videos i've seen, the one thing still missing (on the 955)  is the long press on the map doesn't bring up a submenu with options to navigate to that point, etc.

  • Doesn't work after software 11.28 . My Fenix 7 solar its on the same boat. On Epix 2 forum there is topic about that, Garmin team are trying to solve the problem
