Warning to Anyone Using Workouts: The lap button is on even if you turn it off.

It's made doing workouts an awful experience and because this button is also the back button you can autolap just trying to leave a menu. I have the button off and today on my most important workout of the week I auto lapped just trying to exit the "Sensors and Accessories" menu after turning on my footpod that failed to connect at the start. It skipped the 9 mile portion of my workout and led to every other step being incorrect. I can still analyze the data but it's a lot more tedious than it should be. I have no idea why they insist on forcing me to have an active auto lap button during workouts it's a complete headache for me and they refuse to change it. I have no issue if they wanted to add an option for the lap button such as "workouts only" but I just don't want to use it none of my workouts require it.

The biggest issue again being it's also the back button. I can use it as a back button when zoomed on the navigation data field but for some reason not on the Sensors and Accessories menu. Maybe it's an unfixed bug?

  • That’s been on other watches also. If I do that I just stop session. Save it. Do workout again but skip through where I was and carry out. Then after uploading to garmin I merge to the two activities into one and upload the new file and delete the old ones. Then I’ll have all the correct starts again. You might need to do a manual press to end the lap as you could be 1 mile into a 3 mile block. So you only need to do 2 miles in that part instead of programmed 3 miles but you get the idea

  • thank you so much for giving a great solution to this problem I really do appreciate it! I'll actually set up a few practice workouts to test it with and get the merging part down as I haven't previously tried to merge workouts.

  • Can you not disable the lap key on a 955?

Menu >> Activities and Apps >> Run >> Run Settings >> Lap Key >> Off

If I press the lap key it takes me back to the watch face. Pressing it again takes me back to the activity screen. If it remains on, suggest contacting support about it.

  • You can and I have it off however whenever using workouts it automatically turns itself on and you can't disable it for workouts. Not sure why they decided that was a good idea.

  • So frustrating. Garmin Sierra, is it a bug or a "feature"?

  • in strength / weight / machine training it's used to step through the exercise / sets / reps

  • I think it's a "feature" meant to support workouts which have a step that doesn't end until you press Back/Lap. (e.g. "Warm up until Lap press").

As others suggested, Garmin could've given people a menu option which does the same thing, in order to avoid forcing the Lap button to be enabled. (You can already take a lap from the pause menu.) But they'd probably think having a menu option wouldn't be enough (some users wouldn't know where to find it.)
