[14.xx] BUG. Does not show power in zone 5

I looked at the history of the runs and found that the software with version 14.xx does not show the power times in the 5 zone in the tables. It is the same in watches.

  • I just did an outdoor running interval workout with FW version 14.15 today and did not have this issue.

For reference I set my running power zones based on %TP (with a manually entered TP), with zones as follows:

    Z1 - 0-55%

    Z2 - 55-75%

    Z3 - 75-90%

    Z4 - 90-105%

    Z5 - >105%

  • Actually I think there IS a problem with my running power graphs in terms of power zone computation. Here's my interval workout from today (showing just time in HR zones and power zones).

The total duration of the workout was 63:06 min.

Adding up the times from HR zones we get 62:59 min. That seems acceptably close to the total workout duration, given that Garmin SW rounds down for both percentages and times.

Adding up the times from power zones we get 58:50 min. That seems quite far off from the total workout duration (almost 10%).

Also weird is the fact that zone 5 seems to be capped at 419 W in GC web. There is some strange undefined Z6 in GC web. In both GC mobile and on the watch, Z6 does not exist (as expected) and Zone 5 is listed as >382 W. The zone percentages and times match up on GC web, GC mobile, and the watch. My guess as to what is going on is that something is causing the watch to ignore any power reading >419 W despite the fact that I defined Z5 to be >382 W, not 382-419 W.

This Z6 issue wasn't always there. It started after I changed my TP zones on my watch (this happened a while back, when my watch was still on FW 13.22).

  • Today I ran 5k in a high heart rate and to my amazement the power showed up in the 5 zone.

      zone 6 did not appear.

  • I managed to get rid of the Z6 problem in GC web by resetting the power zones on my watch and setting them back again. Haven't yet done a workout since that involves power readings in Z5, I'll post an update once that happens with the results.

Update 3/6: Did an interval workout with plenty of samples in Z5. This time the watch correctly recorded the amount of time spent in Z5. So resetting my power zones seems to have fixed whatever problem was there before.

  • For me, the last runs normally show the time spent in zone 5 and zone 6 is no longer displayed on the web. I feel like Garmin fixed this somehow without updating the watch software.
