Activity disables Airplane mode even though Airplane mode is on

Activity disables Airplane mode even though Airplane mode is on (icon visible). In addition, after the activity has ended, the watch is still connected to my mobile phone etc., although the flight mode is still activated (icon still present).
Why does the watch go out of flight mode even though I don't want it to?

Finally got a working firmware, dear Garmin team. This is not a watch from the supermarket.

  • Hi Steven

If you searched the forum you would know that is not a new thing. Two reasons - The regulations of Airplane mode has changed,

If you in Airplane mode starts a sync with your phone the bluetooth connection stays on, also Ant+ is active is it is only possible to receive.

The bluetooth connection is a BLE connection = Low Energy and you should not experience any noticable change in battery consumption.

What is your reason for putting your watch in Airplane mode?

  • Hello,

if Airplane mode is offered, it should generally work, right?
When I sleep, I like to have everything turned off. I think it makes a difference to health in the long run. I don't want my watch to constantly transmit something through the area. Some might see things differently.

If I activate the Airplane mode, it has its reasons and this mode should not be exited by an activity. It's enough for me if I synchronize manually at the end of the week. If Garmin doesn't want it then they should remove this mode, but then I'm no longer a customer of this company.

And that mode may be low on power, but I don't want this mode to be useless on power. I also opted for the solar to get the maximum out of it, but it can no longer do that if Bluetooth is constantly switched on! That sucks.

    Edit: and also....
I didn't choose the watch to connect to my phone, I chose to start an activity. The whole handling of this 955 is full of rubbish. Complete bad buy for me. The 945 worked perfectly. But it broke after three years.

  • It is quite simple, If you want no communication at all, then you have to turn off the watch

Only watch that can go offline is garmin tactix delta when in stealth mode.

  • You are right. I will switch off this watch and get a used 945 instead.

  • Notice that if the watch still gets FW updates - then they might change this too.

It is probably due to the changed FAA rules.

read the section Electronics On Board.

    https://www.faa.gov/travelers/fly_safe/information )

  • Why then does the 955 switch off all connections, including Bluetooth, when the Airplanes mode is switched on manually? Don't you agree that it is? If that's how you see it too, why this discussion? I don't care what specs you've read about it or your views on it. All my devices in the household behave as I expect in Airplane mode. Just like 99% of all users here. You really seem to be an exception! Please don't annoy me with your opinion, which in my opinion is total nonsense!
The behavior of the airplane mode is not implemented consistently for me and not communicated by Garmin! I am now no longer allowed to use the watch in the hospital/department because our policy is different... No Bluetooth and WiFi! airplane!
It's not that difficult to understand now.

  • Could you also refer to an article confirming that this is how the Airplane mode now works in Garmin watches? Until then it is just speculation. I doubt it is because of the new regulation. If I put the watch in Airplane Mode, it disconnects from my phone.

Does the new regulation say, that devices should randomly reenable connections? Smiley I don't find this section.

  • Atually the Garmin 935 works the same way..
(Notice that the thread is more than six years old.)

Exept from that, dont shoot the messenger.

It is ok to disaagree, but dont be rude.

I suggest that if you believe that it is a bug, then report it in the Beta Programme group. You can find it in the top menu-bar.

  • If You put the watch in Airplane Mode it will disconnect from your phone. But If you only once decide to syncronize it will turn on the BT - And remember the last state of bluetooth when in Airplane mode.

Fenix 5 also works this way.

If you look to the right in the forum and takes a closer look at "Related" then you will see that this something that have been discussed widely over the years.

Having said that. We have to ask garmin to explain in detail how they see Airplane Mode is working or should be working.

  • On a 945LTE here.

This is absurd and honestly it seems completely random. There are many reasons for wanting airplane mode to just work. I am often just on the edge of bluetooth range with my phone so it constantly buzzes at me saying connected and then not connected. Also, once it connects I start getting notifications of emails, messages, etc. I don't want these when I am ask my work desk - that's what my computer is for. I only want these when I am on a run so I can glance and see if I need to respond. And not only should it just work (stay in flight mode unless you take it out, or are prompted to take it out - like when you start an activity and have it linked to trigger a Strava beacon), but the icon should accurately reflect the status if it is taken out. Sometimes I'll come back from a run, wait until it syncs, then put it in flight mode. Then a few moments later I'll get a Strava kudos or email notification, so I have to take it out of flight mode, and then back in and that mostly works. Charging it also seems to take it out of flight mode (despite what the icon says). So does loading up workouts - I don't mind that so much, but a warning would be nice, as would a change of the icon so you actually know and can revert in one step, instead of doing the dance of out and back in again. arrrrrggghhhh!
