TopoActive Europe 2022.11

Maybe interesting for some as I did not notice the update before. Garmin Express asked me to install TopoActive Europe Update 2022.10. After update and disconnecting from Laptop, the watch was frozen and USB connection was still displayed (well, that's what you expect from 955, right?). After a hard reboot it now shows the TopoActive Europe with version 2022.11....

  • Were you ever able to update the maps via wi-fi? I see that the update is available, but when I connect to usb power (as watch requests) nothing happens, maps do not update themselves.

  • What do you mean with Wifi? Map Manager on watch? I've just started Garmin Express and installed the new update. I thought it would do this via USB.

  • I updated without problems from PC with Garmin Express.

  • Saw this post and was ok, let's connect the watch and update maps.. Told there's 2022.10 and umm, read the full post, ok then. It's now updating itself.

  • Updated it with no problems. Try it on another pc.

  • My update worked but freeze was unexpected as well as 2022.11 instead of 2022.10 version.

  • I'm trying to update through the WiFi, more than 12h still "in queue".

Don't want to install Garmin Express only to update the maps once every two years SweatStill asking myself why they don't release a monthly update, trails can change for a lot of reasons during a year..

  • I think the process isn't very automated. Also think about the cost. I think the download was something like 13+ gigabytes.

Or course one could then try to do some binary diff patch release to get the monthly download size smaller, but that would need implementing
and the process should also be more automatic. And hard to say what would the sized then be.

And free space wise, could you nicely do that binary diff on the watch itself. You don't have memory for do the new map in memory. So you would need most likely free space for the size of the largest new map files to be able to do that process on on the watch itself. That would probably be pretty annoying limitation in many opinions.

With Garmin express the binary patch and creating new map file would be totally more ok, and then you would need the Garmin Express for 12 times a year, would that be better?

  • Map update over WiFI is possible only during watch charge, it is to prevent watch discharge and faulty downloads.

  • We are talking about Garmin, not a middle school project of three guys. Everything you said is correct but I'm expecting that Garmin in 2023 already has all these things and if not can implement it Grin a few months, we are not talking about sending a rocket to mars but relative simple things where is full of open source project where to start (for a middle school project Grin).

Look at OSMAnd app and so on, there are plenty of apps that give you updates of the maps every HOUR if you want to, OSM is updated at every user change.

Here we are talking about Garmin, I think they have the resources to do that but guess what? Better selling a new watch every six months instead of updating the "older" one. In fact they haven't write anywhere if and when they'll update their products :'(

With Garmin Express I'll expect hourly maps update, not even 12 times a year :D Of course I'll never update it with this frequency but it will be nice to update it the day before a trekking in a new place and so on and knowing that I have the most updated maps (by OSM).

IMHO that's what I'm expecting from a company like Garmin.
