Indoor cycling VO2 max - erg mode workouts

Since winters in Canada are miserable, I've been running indoors lately which doesn't contribute to a VO2 max reading ( which I believe is normal?). Since my 955 has only been basing estimates off my indoor cycling workouts (trainer road) my VO2 has been dropping by 1-2 points every ride. After my latest ftp test I have increased by over 50 points during the same period that my VO2 has been plummeting. What gives?

Does using erg mode and doing a typical workout ( warm up, multiple sets of varying efforts, and a cool down) make my 955 think I'm struggling? Performance condition for these workouts usually comes up very low (even though all other metrics say otherwise) which makes me wonder if this is linked to the VO2 estimate

  • I feel like the same thing is happening to me. My fitness is definitely going up as evidenced by TrainerRoad progression levels increasing, but most of my workouts have been inside on a trainer in ERG mode, and my VO2 Max as estimated by Garmin has gone down. If it comes back up after a good month of outdoor riding then I bet it’s just the algorithm not being tuned for structured indoor training.
