"Activity in Progress" state machine bug

I've seen this in 14.08, 14.12 and 14.13, but only today have I been able to join together the puzzle pieces.

Occasionally the watch spontaneously thinks it's in an activity:

  • Sensors connect if they're in range, and the notifications for that show in the upper part of the watch face.
  • The Power Save timeout screen starts after 5 minutes.

If you view the watch face using a hotkey during an ongoing activity the watch, for the rest of that activity:

  • Might drop GPS.
  • Might disconnect sensors.
  • Prompt for RD pod removal if that sensor had been connected.
  • Re-enable touch.
  • After the end of the activity it may be in enter an "in activity" state (eg. touch disabled).

This might also be the source of some people's "touch stopped working" problems.

  • That is exactly what I experience. Here I posted it in the Beta Bug channel:

    forums.garmin.com/.../weird-state-when-getting-back-to-watchface-from-activities

Seems like Garmin ignores this bug. I don't understand how others don't report this, since I think all units are affected.

Please could you try out something for me? If you start an Indoor Climb activity and press the BACK button to start a Rest period, does your watch quit to the watchface? I always have the problems you mentioned in your post after Indoor Climb activity. I guess it is because it goes to the watchface even without any hotkey.

  • To me it looks like the root cause of a lot of other strange behavior and bug (e.g., rapid battery drain, etc.). Garmin should revisit their code base to find the problem. A fix would solve a lot of other problems reported in this forum.

  • Anyone else experiencing this? Is going back to Watchface during an activity such a unique thing? Slight smile Really no one else?

  • I can confirm that I get the Power Save countdown randomly. It seems to happen more often after going to the watch face during activity.

  • i too have gotten this and thought i had accidentally bump the activity menu and chosen an activity. but it has happened at surprising times and now i realize that this is a bug and as suggested might be the cause of some of the random battery drains that sometimes occur.

  • Yes, exactly. I'm pretty sure the rapid battery drains are side effects of this bug. I hope Garmin noticed it too, and is working on a fix. It would fix a lot of other bugs that appear because of this one.

  • I use the "resume later" function during the activity (when he rested at the huts, etc.). Never in my life did I think of choosing a watch face during an activity. The only reason I get to the main menu is when I want to check the connected sensors.

  • In my opinion, it is a really useful feature that you can go to the watchface from anywhere, and scroll through the widgets. E.g., I have some Connect IQ widgets I find useful even during activities. That worked perfectly in previous generation watches (FR935, FR945). It works in FR955 too, but it results in the above mentioned bug. I understand that you do not use this feature, but a lot of us do. Slight smile
