HRV is Still Garbage

I can't pinpoint which update started this issue with HRV, but it's clearly wrong. It went from being in the 80-90 range to 50-60 range overnight, and has been steadily declining seemingly nightly for months. I'll have high sleep scores, with an avg HRV being in the 40s, which is ridiculous. At this point, I think my HRV would be higher while awake than it is during my sleep. Like many of the 955 issues, this feature is integral to how the rest of the data is utilized making the watch more of an inconvenience than anything else.

I've posted about this before and keep waiting for updates that explain or provide a fix to no avail. I bet more users are experiencing this than known as most people don't understand the data they're looking at in the first place. Beyond frustrating. I was happier with my 935.

EDIT: I commented this within the post, but figured I'd add an edit as well:

Ok, so, to anyone here having a similar problem and not just here to get off on telling people what they think HRV is (thanks for that btw), the factory reset seemed to work.

It is true: with the new update Physio True Up saves your HRV data and a factory reset won't erase this data, but it did seem to fix the problem. In the days after the reset, my HRV trended back to normal, above what has become my "baseline" due to months of incorrect numbers, and it now has a normal relationship to stress, HR, etc based on training. Again, nothing else about my training or daily life has changed - this was 100% an issue with a previous update.

If you're having this problem, or may think your HRV numbers don't accurately reflect what you're experiencing, try a factory reset. Hopefully that helps you out.

  • It was just rolled out in the firmware that was released on Wednesday (and isn’t even out to all devices yet). As much as it would be great if support people were completely up to date on where things are, it’s hard to fault them with something brand new that’s still being put in place.

  • I can absolutely fault garmin support for not knowing when changes are made to their devices and how those changes affect their users. It's a simple question: have you updated to 14.15 yet? Yes. Ok, so physio true up now includes HRV data - factory reset won't reset that data. Why would I not expect garmin support reps to be up to date?

  • Totally agree. Garmin support is a joke. Same with the clueless software developers. They keep on changing important algorhitms without notice the customers. Same *** happened with myFenix 6 pro , after a update about 2 months ago the HRV was down by 20 points all out of sudden. When they released the 955 i asked them if the apac and row software still existed , the lady who " was happy to assist me" didn't have a clue.

  • HRV has been mostly reasonable for me over the past 2 months, but it seems to have broken around this week. I've now had 5 straight days of HRV in the 30s, when my baseline is in the 40s range. I've had days where my HRV was in the 30s before, but not 5 in a row. I haven't changed my weekly workout load, my sleep duration and environment have remained constant, I wake up every morning feeling refreshed, and I haven't noticed any symptoms this week that would lead me to think that I have an illness. Yet my body battery during this time has pretty much never gotten past the 70s (previously, it was not uncommon for me to start the day in the 90s).

Strangely enough, when I'm awake and sitting at my desk or in front of the TV my stress level is quite low. In fact, lower than when I'm asleep. Starting to wonder if this week is closer to my baseline and that the higher HRV measurements in the past were a fluke.

  • I think this is probably all linked to a problem with the heart rate sensor on the FR955 during sleep.  Mine has not been working proper for the last few months with the sensor going off randomly while I am sleeping.  I got a replacement watch yesterday after reporting the issue and same problem with my new watch.  Since all the health metrics are dependent on the heart rate sensor, nothing seems to be accurate for me (eg. body battery, stress, HRV, etc).  Very upset this is model, never had any issues with my previous 935 or 945

  • Is it possible only some were affected? I honestly don't get it, my watch seems very accurate to me. I see improvements when I make better choices, I see decreases when I am sick or drink or eat too much. Recently my baseline has been increasing due to those better choices.

  • Yes, often bugs affects only a part of the customers.

In my case it also seens to at least show some reality when comparing to my history, even if the numbers are not real.

Last week I trained hard and long and was feeling real need to rest. HRV and resting HR reflected that.

After 1 day resting at home my HRV increased back to the top of my baseline and my resting HR dropped back to botton of my baseline.

Did a second rest day yesterday and today its still all good.

  • After a trip to Germany, my HRV dipped for 3-4 weeks. After that it gradually rose and is now back to normal. So caught something there. Also I've now paid closer attention to HRV, and it clearly dips during weekends if I've consumed alcohol (yet slept pretty normal hours), so HRV seems to be working for me quite well.
