Switch from FT735XT to FR955

I am thinking of buying the new FR 955, but I am not sure if it is worth it, can anyone advice whether or not it will be beneficial? I do run and bike quite often, for bike I use cycle computer and not the watch though. I watched a lot of videos on FR955, but still not sure. I thought there might be people who used the same watch and switched to FR955, so I though I would ask what their experience is.

  • I didn't have the 735 but I had the 745 and now have the 955. I mainly run , swim a bit.

I suppose it depends what you want from the watch.

I like the touch screen on the 955 having had the 620/630 before that had touch screens.

The screen is a bit bigger which also helps with visibility.

I am not sure if the 735 has Strava live segments (i am guessing not - EDIT I see it does just found a spec sheet), the 955 does. Thats is useful if you are interested in that.

The 955 also gets the newest Garmin features like Morning report etc, race widget etc, that are nice to have but can be managed without.

I chose the 955 over the 255 for the Touch and Strava Segments

955 also has better GPS options , but honestly my 630 was fine and that is 5 year old (or more) now. I suppose it depends on where one is situated.  Multi GPS is mega accurate though for sure!

I decided on the Whitestone one and use an aftermarket Velcro or similar to Apple Watch Nike band, which make it sit better for me.

I have had mine for 6 months , use the HRM-PRO plus and really like it. There have been a few challenges with the firmware but mine has been great since the last two versions of firmware.

Looking at this , the 735XT seems to do most of what one really needs ...of course most of us have devices that do so much more than we every use..

  • I agree with S.M.R. I did have the 735xt and liked it. The 955 has more features, and I personally like the "training readiness" feature and all the things it does with HRV. It depends on how much of a data geek you are though, and you may find the 255 more than sufficient as it replaces everything on the 735xt and more.

  • I had the 735XT mostly as a runner and then for a bit as I got into cycling. It finally died (lasted like four years) and I tried an Apple Watch. Even though I had a Garmin Edge too, I was real sick of things not just integrating, so I sold the AW and got the Forerunner 955. I really, really, really wanted the Training Readiness and Training Status features, and they’re so far living up to my expectations. Obviously it blows the AW out of the water for running, cycling, and integrating with my Edge (and Index Scale…), but also compared to the 735XT it’s a huge improvement in terms of features. I specifically got the 955 over the 255 again for that Training Readiness. I don’t have a coach and it’s really important to me not to accidentally overtrain (or undertrain), so with it and the Training Status I can manage just doing my own running and cycling workouts and know if I’m trending in the right direction.

  • Just opt for the non solar 955.
