Course points and turn-by-turn

Two questions, both related to course navigation but slightly different things.

1. When creating course points in Garmin Connect web, you specify both the type (e.g. generic point, landmark, crossing, etc.) as well as a name. When I navigate a course with course points on the watch I get an "up ahead" screen which lists both type and name of all upcoming course points as well as distance to those points. Additionally, when I approach a course point, I get a notification on the watch which shows the course point type. However, this notification does not also show the course point name, and I couldn't find a way to get the name to show from this notification. Is there a way to see the course point name in the notification?

2. This question may be more suitable for the Garmin Connect forum, but has anyone had issues with the turn-by-turn navigation generated by GC when sending a course to the watch? I've noticed that the watch will often tell me there's a turn up ahead on a course when that fact is obvious and there's no other path that would cause me to get lost (i.e. a useless notification). Yet when I approach some areas where the course splits off, the watch doesn't tell me which direction to go and I end up backtracking when I pick the wrong direction.

  • On point number 2, yes, I've had it where the road I was following turned left but the track I needed to follow continued on a path straight ahead. The watch didn't warn me that I was to leave the road.

This doesn't just affect Garmin. I've had driving directions from Google Maps with useless turn notifications and missing "turn off this road and continue straight ahead" directions, usually on minor roads.

  • I have a bit different problem. When I start navigating a course on my 955 (created on GC site or komoot) I don't get turn by turn at all. It gives me a notification only when I'm off the course. And there's even no turn-by-turn list

  • re: #2, yes! I created several trail running "courses" on familiar routes, and have been trying out using them as practice for use during trail races or other first-time outings in unfamiliar territory. I get almost constant turn alerts when there are no trail crossings or other options—it's just that the trail... makes a turn. There's no where else to go, but my watch is telling me that in 100' there will be a turn to the right (which I can very easily see with my own eyes, and has nothing to do with *navigating*). When I do get to an actual turn, where I leave one named trail and transition to another, I'll also get an alert, but I'm getting so many dang alerts that it's impossible to tease out what's important and what's just noise.

Is there a way to either edit my courses or change settings to keep useful turn alerts for navigating changes in a trail system (like turn-by-turn in a car's GPS, "Turn Left on NE 14th Ave"), but stopping alerts every time the trail takes a bend?

  • Hi, did you find a fix for that problem? Because I am having the same issue.

  • Unfortunately not. I turned off ALL alerts, and end up navigating by the map—not an ideal solution at all while running, but much less annoying than constant buzzing on the wrist…
