Skating profile

Hi,

Ray is also bringing attention to this unbelievable omission from Garmin.

https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2022/12/ice-skating-gps-watches-tidbits.html/

And as a Finn, I need to quote this:
"Of course, both Suunto and Polar are Finnish companies, where ice skating is as much a national pastime as sauna usage. Either company missing that sport profile would be laughed at by their peeps. That said, Garmin acquired Firstbeat back a few years ago, and they too are Finnish. I’d have thought by now Team Finland would have succeeded in convincing Team Olathe on this. Instead, we got Disc Golf and Water Tubing."

Sad, sad!

Also in big dreams there would be multiple Skating profiles, as things like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tour_skatinghttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_skating and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Figure_skating exists to name few.

  • Roller skating / Inline Skating has been requested for several years now. A compilation of ideas for a native activity profile is found in this thread: Inline Skating | Activity, Data & Badges

  • I don't think we can make Garmin do anything, they do what they like. I would like Ray bringing that up should get so much visibility that they would think that they should implement them, but no.

    But good luck!

  • Thank you! Sadly, I think there's truth in your words. But seeing how many other activities have been added throughout the years like Tubing as highlighted on Ray's article, not that I'm against it, but I don't see why something that has been suggested constantly for almost a decade has to be left out. I only see it benefiting Garmin and us users/customers. I'll be honest to say I've only focused on inline, but taking into account the similarity there is between ice and inline speed skating I would expect that an olympic sport would at least get priority in being included.

Hope you get that sport profile soon enough to enjoy it!

  • And I think there could be also one pretty easy workaround to add bunch of activities people want.
    - Add bunch of new sports to Connect
    - Let people copy current activities and then in setting classify it to one of those sports in Connect
    - When activity done with that is uploaded to Connect, it would take that sport that is set in the settings.

But yes. The current sports Garmin supports and not support is pretty weird. There's a lot of bunch of very niche sports and then very clear omissions.

I would also like my orienteering to be orienteering in Connect as now they all are trail running and one can't classify orienteering and trail running. For skate I can at least change the sport to skate manually (if I happen to remember), but with orienteering I can't even do that.
