alpine ski profile is counting descent but also ascent in chairlift in total mileage

Good morning everyone; last weekend I went skiing for the first time with my Garmin 955 and of course I used the specific preset profile for alpine skiing. Well, to my great surprise, I realized that it also counted the km done in the chairlift or cable car, bringing the final mileage of the day to more than 90 km in total, which was obviously wrong. A friend of mine using the connect IQ downloaded app on his Garmin 935 had about half my miles. How is it possible to prevent the watch from also counting the km uphill? it makes no sense to add up both the descents and the ascents on the chairlift. Is it possible that the "alpine skiing" profile is buggy? Thanks for your answers.

  • I had the same problem with FR255 this weekend. It was my first ski run with it and I was surprised that although the number of runs was correct, the device calculated the total distance including the chairlift rides uphills. The chairlift track is also visible on the map.

  • That's correct! I can see the chairlift and segments for uphills, with ranking and kom for the chairlift track..that's crazy and completely useless. My old 945 was just perfectly recognizing when was in a chairlift and I've got the time and mileage only for the descent and not obviously including also the ascent with chairlift! c'mon Garmin, that's a giant bug unless there's a specific option to select this, but I couldn't find it anywhere!

  • Anyone else? this is really annoying...the ski season has started and it's such disappointing my 955 can't manage this info properly. I've now downloaded an app from Connect IQ store but overall I always do prefer to use the built in apps instead of the downloaded (and payment) ones and I'm not even sure the loaded app will work either.

  • ready to go ski in a few weeks. do you start the ski activity when you start going down the slope only or when you start your day and it is supposed to know when you are using a chair lift ?

  • I start the activity going downhill from my apartment that is located on the slope going to the village. From there I take the first chairlift

  • I have the same issue. Was working perfectly with the Forerunner 745 I had before. Quite a step back.

  • glad i did not get a 955 before my ski trip. i am using my Fenix 6 and it works greart.

  • Same here. Just bought 955 before ski holidays. Really disappointed. For the cost of this watch this should not happen.

  • Same problem. I have FR945 and my wife FR255. FR945 counts only rides and her FR 255 counts rides and chairlift rides.

  • Same issue here. I think this is clearly a bug and someone at Garmin should look into it. Most other models don’t have this error and even the Forerunner online manual advises that only downhill distance is recorded. Disappointing.
