Help me to choose, garmin 955 vs fenix 7s

Hi everybody,

I'm about to buy a new watch for training (swimming 2 days a week with chest strap and 2 days gym strengh training) and 24/7 wearing. I've been reading several reviews, many youtubers and customer reviews but I'm even more confused now.

I had the garmin 935 during almost 2 years and I was very happy with it, very comfortable even when sleeping so my mainly doubt is about comfort on fenix 7s.

Also I don't remember having errors of any type on 935 but these days I'v been reading last posts about some random errors on different areas on garmin 955.

The price would be the same for both so what do you think? Which would you choose and why?

Thanks in advance

  • I would take the 955 than the Fenix 7s

    1. Lighter. I also replaced the standard band with a nylon velcro band or and apple watch sport type band and that makes even less noticable.

    2. Bigger screen

    3. Longer battery life (theoretically)

    4. Multi Band GPS and Sat IQ

I have had my FR955 since release and yes the bugs at the outset were irritating (to put it mildly) but it seems to have stabilised. I haven't experienced the many 13.22 bugs mentioned for some reason.

I am mainly a runner , but I do maybe one swim (indoor pool) as week. I find it Ok for the swim although oddly enough not as accurate as my old AW6 that I tried a few times as a base. For running I have found it to be excellent and have had no major issues. I do use an external HRM though as I have never found optical sensors particularly accurate in my case. I also enjoy the additional RD data form the HRM-PRO.

I decided to by the white one, after many years of black FRs. I have had many Forerunners since the 201.

My recent ones were the 745, and before that the 630.  I did try the 945LTE as the 955 hadn't released but I returned that for the 955.

I did consider the 255 as that has most of the features, but the lack of touchscreen and Strava live segments swayed me to the 955.

I am not sure of the gym specific functionality of the watches however.

It seem like a tough choice and the fact that GPS accuracy may be less important to you may sway the decision, especially as you mention you could get at the same price.

  • I have the fenix 7 solar 47 and the 955 and i love both. It is simple, fenix 7 have better user experience in terms of software, better look and build quality. To use as everyday watch is perfect and looks great . However 955 is a great watch too,is lighter, very comfortable to use,to sleep and have more storage and multi band gps. The software experience is good but in the fenix 7 is better. Its up to you,you have to decide what fits you better on your everyday use

  • thanks so much for your extensive answer, I found it very helpful mate

I agree with you in pros, specially on battery life and I place in the top of the advantages the comfort due to its lower weight to wear all the day and sleep with it

My main con was the several posts talking about errors/bugs and the fact that fenix 7 doesn't seem to have any of them or at least very very few

Which band did u buy? Could u link an example please?

Did u try the hrm swim? With my old 935 I had the polar h10 and was very happy with it, absolutetly perfect fit and accuracy.

    Thanks in advance

  • I do notice looking at the Fenix and Epix forums that the later software versions also see to give issues with them. Not sure of the extent, but it seems that there is a general issue with software updates at the moment at Garmin. All these new features seem to result in more bugs!

The bands I have are these:

It is quite a simple process to remove the stock strap (used a knife to move the clip) and these had "quick release" type pins. I haven't had any issues with them coming loose. The YOUKEX one is teh one I use the most currently.

I haven't used any external HRM for swimming. I am a very amateur swimmer so haven't tried my HRM-PRO strap.

It seems the Fenix is a more premium level of watch and for some reason the.software seems more stable. Not sure why this should be the case....

  • If you want a more stable, better supported and polished watch then go for Fenix 7s.

If you find a lighter weight etc more important and perhaps want to save some bucks (though not a thing in this case) go for 955.

I own the 955 for about half a year now and while it now finally is up to expectations (mostly) it took a loooong time and still feels less well developed/etc then the Fenix 7 series.

For me weight is very important and the price was also quite a bit lower at time of buying (also had good experiences with the 935 and 945) so I went with the 955. Have been thinking about selling it and getting a fenix7 quite often though.

Currently ok and pretty satisfied with it but yeah, it sure wasn't the greatest experience so to say

  • thanks for sharing!! I prefer the first one Slight smile

I've been reading about the hrm swim specific one and some people is not very happy about it in terms of comfort

So will have to buy again the polar h10, sounds ridiculous but if it is the best in quality price nothing to complain

  • do u have standard model or solar one? The version with solar charge is only 35€ more and I doubt about picking this one or not

  • If comfort is one of your top priorities which it is for me, I would recommend the 255 as it has the best case dimensions. My wife has a 255S and its a workhorse.

  • If you are like most people, you only use a fraction of what these watches can produce of features and data. So, from that point of view the watches are identical.

If price is the same, it comes down to looks.

Personally, I don’t like the ‘look, I’m an outdoor guy” looks of the fenix, so I pick the forerunner. But I think the 935 was the prettier watch, compared to a 955.

For your day to day life/workouts it really doesn’t change anything wether you pick de forerunner or the fenix.

  • Great, thanks for your answer!! Now my last doubt is about compatibility of chest strap. My FR 935 was fully compatible with Polar h10 (the most comfortable chest strap for me) even for swimming with top accuracy and 0 problems recording. However I've read some people saying it is not compatible for swimming with fenix 6/7 because it does not store the data while u swim and send later to the app. Very weird and don't know how it is possible.

    Thanks in advance.
