FW 13.21: VO2Max isn't changing

Hi there,

Ever since I got my 955 Solar, my VO2Max hasn't changed at all and it is stuck at 64!  I read the forum before posting this and I believe mentioned that this bug should be fixed on 13.21 but it is definitely not the case, so I would like to start a new thread and raise this.

Anyone else on 13.21 still having this issue?

  • It's a "bug" of every Garmin device since last summer. Probably they changed something in the algorithm. I had a Fenix 6 from march 2021 until november 2022 and since summer 2022 VO2max stop changing

  • They changed the algorithm so that it updates slower. To see if there incremenral changes, go to the training status widget on your watch, scroll down to VO2max and open that. It shows incremental changes here in contrast to Garmin Connect. For example, mine stayed at 54 but I experienced a decline, followed by an increase in performance

  • Also if you use Runalyze you can see the .fit file data to two decimals and you can see it moves all the time. I did a suggestion to Garmin to show decimals on the watch and app screens for this.

  • Well I don't believe it's a backend bug.  I am attaching a plot of my VO2max which shows how it used to change using my FR235 (orange circle) and then when I switched to the FR955 (yellow circle) staying literally stuck at 64.

To make things even worse/weirder, I was using the built-in OHR on the 235, whereas I have been only using the HRM-Pro Plus that I got with the 955, every day, hoping that I would get more accurate data!

The only thing that changed was the watch and clearly the VO2Max stopped being updated.

  • I am guessing that the manner of calculating on the 235 was very different. If I look at mine from my 630 745 and 955 and do not see such pronounced daily movements in VO2 Max over many years. I looked back over 6 years of data through Runalyze where one can see the Vo2 Max from the Garmin .fit files and my movements are in the first or second decimals generally slowly moving across whole numbers over long periods of time but never as the red marked area indicates.

  • I would argue that a change of 5 points of VO2max within 4 weeks is not realistic and that the new algorithm is closer to reality

  • I have very similar experience - early this year i was using old Fenix 3 and vo2 was fluctuating accordingly to my fitness level

This summer i switched to 955 and vo2 max is locked on 60 no matter my fitness which in last weeks declined quite a lot and should be reflected in my current vo2. I’m on 13.21.

  • Can you post a picture of the VO2Max widget on your watch? Glance --> Select Training Status --> Select VO2Max
