Adaptative training from today's suggestions works?

Coming from 745, I decided to buy 955 for the adaptative training feature after adding an event on race calendar.

I am quite surprised that I am receiving always the same kind of workouts and also very confused by the almost total absence of speed workouts. For example I never had speed repeats (i.e. 1000x [X times] or fartlek workouts).

Anyone had results with adaptative training or I should just give up and follow a marathon training schedule like I did in the past? Hope garmin will introduce new workouts, for example I used garmin coach in the past and it was quite useful. I thought that adaptative training based on race calendar would've been the "evolution" of garmin coach but seems that I am wrong.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

  • My FR955 is not syncing right now, but before the problems I noticed that the suggested Workouts were repetitive, then one day I saw that I had a speed one scheduled for 2 days...next morning report I say the easy run again and decided to use a training plan.

  • After adding a race it was very easy run focused for me to, but after a few weeks i now have regular sprints and threshold sessions. I think most hobbyists like me have to much threshold runs, so Garmin maybe first tries to switch more to easy runs

  • I also have sprints and threshold runs, but what I meant in my original post is : these workouts they don’t seem focused on the upcoming race event, it looks like they are made to mantain/improve your actual fitness form. For example you will never get “race day pace” workouts or, at least for me, long runs are always 1h17 long. These “daily suggestions” are always very very very repetitive. I dropped them to follow an actual plan!

  • You are right . This ecosystem it's a joke.

Set a race for 5km at a target of 8min/km and see the planned workouts for a few weeks/months.

Then remove that race and set another one for 50km at 4min/km.

You will get the same workouts!

Yes.. "longer run workout" it's always 1h17m

  • I understand it's a work in progress but if you are rolling out a function out of Beta then it should be working with minor bugs...this isn't a minor bug...it affects your plan and how much you believe in the system...I recently started running and trusted my training to Garmin...no more...If my FR955 issues aren't resolved before my marathon this 11th, then I'm going full Apple and Strava training plan.

  • Same for me. I now use the daily suggestions only in my off time in winter or between plans to mix it up a little.

  • To be fair, Garmin has free, dedicated marathon plans on its website that let you see the complete plan till the race. Only downside they are not "adaptive" but that is the same with most plans.

But I would also like an option to see all workouts from the "adaptive" algorithm to be sure it's working

  • My suggested long runs are usually over 2 hours unless I’ve been overtraining in which case they’ll be closer to 75 or 90 minutes.

I find that the suggested pace for easy runs is too quick for me so I don’t activate the actual workouts on those days and instead just go for an easy run at my own pace.

I do use the threshold and sprint workouts. Sometimes I’ll look ahead and grab one of the future workouts but I try to follow the general balance suggested by the 955.

I agree that there’s room for improvement in the suggested workouts but I’m enjoying it for now between training blocks.

I’d like to see the ability to set rest days and approximate weekly mileage/time as well as more variety in the suggested workouts.
