Any showstopper issues with 955? Safe to buy? Big disappointments after the first months?

Any big issues with 955 that should prevent me from buying it? I saw some issues with BT and lines on screen, but this seems to be fixed. I' m not happy with GPS of F6 and display of F7 Sapphire is not working for me with the glare and low contrast.

What are be the big pro's of a Fenix 7 compared to a 955 other than Titan case, Sapphire (not for me anyway)? Will the 955 get update for the same time or is this much shorter for the Forerunner series?

  • exactly the same for me

  • Will it ever be fixed? If you bet on Garmin to fix the more advanced functions later on you can get one, but as it is now you might as well get a Forerunner 255, and get the really good GPS function for less money.

The advanced race planning functions have been made useless by bugs such as the buggy training effect labeling and the broken max heart rate detection problems (several different problems with heart rate detection).

Here's a list of versions of FW and the bugs I've experienced:

    10.10

Didn't run it for long enough to really say.

    11.12

Battery bug, so after a run with connect IQ fields (like Stryd), the battery use would be increased and watch dead the day after.

    12.23

    Connect IQ battery bug fixed!

Max heart rate detection broken, so that it would change the max heart rate even on an easy run where you have been nowhere near your max heart rate.

Also when a new max heart rate is detected, the pulse zones are changed (even though you have it set to be based on %LTHR).

Graphical bug - Line randomly shown across display during activities..

Race predictor actually quite reasonable for me (after I set the max heart rate manually and disabled auto detection).

Primary benefit labeling broken, for example a 50 min easy run in Zone 2, could be labeled as an VO2MAX effort.

Daily suggested workout broken, probably due to the primary benefit being broken, After an (mislabled) easy run, quality workouts converted to base runs.

Planning a race on a day broken, because the daily suggested workouts are broken,

    12.27

Graphical bug with line in activities still there.

    Primary benefit bug fixed.

Race predictor unrealistic. Says I should run a 4 minute better 10k for example, even though I've taken it easy with training the last couple of week.

Not sure if the max heart rate stuff is fixed, because I still have auto detection off (it's such a mess to cleanup after it, if it's still broken).

So to sum up, I've had it since June, and it's been pretty broken all the time. In every release some bugs are fixed, some are not fixed and a few more new and exciting bugs added.

  • I'm getting a bit nervous. My 955 was not yet delivered and I'm about to finally return the F7S. If the Sapphire/Powerglass/Touch Display of the F7S wasn't so hard to read, I'd stick with it.

  • Today, new issue on 12.27 (I haven't received 13.22 until they paused rollout): After 1 hour long run, 955 started to periodically disconnect from my phone (iOS 16.1.1) and then reconnecting for few seconds. Then another disconnect followed, and so on... Phone notifications didn't make their way on watch. After the restart of the watch it seems to be "fixed".

  • iOS 16.1.2 is out...could that be it?

My FR I remember doing the disconnect and reconnect thing after completely stopping the syncing...

  • Avoid at all cost.

This platform it's totally broken. It's a bad joke.

Just an example: have been reported for months that Garmin connect it's unable to show any new detected LHTR. It's only correctly synced when you sync thru Garmin Express!!!!

Such basic and important functionality has been broken for at least 5 months .... On a premium device like this!

In fact: I think they are not trying to fix that . There are several threads about that on this forum and hey just ask you to sync thru Garmin Express!

I have had several Garmin devices thru the years (forerunner and edge). All of them had issues. But they were usable. Forerunner 955 it's totally unusable (besides the more basic functionality).

  • Sad...I was trusting that they would fix my FR955 syncing issue or just send me a new one...guess I'm stuck with good old analog uploading :P USB only...I'm getting an Apple Watch Ultra...

  • If you you hope to track any serious activity, like trail or swimming, look somewhere else. Not useless, just not accurate enough and vastly underwhelming. After a few months, trust no more the data recorded...

Updates to fix this mess: after 6 months, feels like a joke, care no more, what ever! just disappointed. Looking at other brands right now, never again...

A shame, the size and weight of this one would have been perfect for the intended purpose.

A good lesson to stop looking at Youtube reviews. They never seem to follow trough on how the products real usefulness overtime. Just reviews *cought* {adds} when they are launched, spitting back the marketing lines, before the next product is out...

  • Did you forget from Bluetooth on phone , remove the app ,  then restart both watch and phone , reinstall app and re-pair the watch to the phone. That sorted some of my BT issue

  • Even if this may help, this shouldn't be the norm for a watch of this category (Garmin markets it as a professional triathlon watch). Bugs of course happen sometimes, but the situation around 955 is truly ridiculous. Performing pairing/unpairing/re-pairing/factory reset every few weeks is basically unacceptable. That's really bad user experience. Usually when you buy a product from some proven brand and pay rather a little bit more, you expect that the product generally works as advertised. Doing such workaround would be somehow understandable just in case of some $50 no-name Chinese watch.
