Any showstopper issues with 955? Safe to buy? Big disappointments after the first months?

Any big issues with 955 that should prevent me from buying it? I saw some issues with BT and lines on screen, but this seems to be fixed. I' m not happy with GPS of F6 and display of F7 Sapphire is not working for me with the glare and low contrast.

What are be the big pro's of a Fenix 7 compared to a 955 other than Titan case, Sapphire (not for me anyway)? Will the 955 get update for the same time or is this much shorter for the Forerunner series?

  • Compared to the Fenix7 line, the FR 955 is missing:

    - Good watch faces with many data fields and long touch to go to widget

    - Widget/glance folders

    - Power modes customizable per activity

    - Many outdoor activities like windsurf, kite board, sail...

    - Native apps / widgets like Tides and Stocks

    - Better sunset / sunrise widget

    - Scrolling through charts like HR and stress history

    And I keep finding more.

  • For me the worst part at the moment is the fact that 955 does not calculate changes to Vo2max and training status correctly. If that doesn’t get fixed soon I might as well change to Apple Watch ultra.

  • Mine seems to be ok now, the TE was definitely funny in earlier versions of the FW but since 13.15 (possibly 12.27) has been as I'd expect it to be.

The VO2 Max is moving in the decimals and I have looked at my historical date via Runalyze (which shows to two decimals the data form the Garmin fit file) to see how it moved over the last 12 months which included a FR630, FR 745 as well as the FR955 in the last few months, and it seems to look logical. Over that period it has progressed from 58.86 to 63.38 month averages and is largely due to the increase in consistence, more varied training and volume over the past 13 months.

I do wish Garmin had a screen / report with the decimals of the VO2 max as that would definitely help - I did log this on the "ideas" logging.

  • I had stayed on firmware 10.10 - until 13.21 looked like it had fixed most issues.  There's still a few silly bugs, such as zooming out on the map suddenly jumps to a location somewhere in the ocean miles away, and other disappointing map issues that you'd expect a touch screen watch to handle.  The right button switches between zoom & pan icons, but they all only zoom, even when showing pan icons - although this behaves differently in the 'map' activity - where the 'pan' movement is tiny, not proportional to the zoom level - also no apparent way to select an icon on the map and find out what it is.

I had an issue with proximity alerts getting corrupted with json fragment appearing in the waypoint lists - as if the routine for saving preferences has some parsing bugs - less broken on 13.21 but still pretty rubbish - it's like no-one actually tested some of this functionality.

Occasionally scrolling down through the options before starting an activity when it loops around the list you'll find it switches to a different activity - usually fixed with a reboot - just silly glitches which dent your confidence in trusting it to record an important activity.

However, it's not failed at the basics of tracking yet - managed a 6 hour+ ride yesterday broadcasting heart rate to my Wahoo Bolt and connected to a power meter and a varia radar light with an IQ field recording vehicle passes and another IQ field recording battery usage.

I really hope they can sit down and work through the mapping & touchscreen implementation properly, rather than small bug fixes which lead to inconsistencies across the device, for this aspect I miss my Apple Watch running Workoutdoors for mapping (although that hasn't implemented navigation yet)

Does anyone know how you actually report a bug - rather than just a forum topic and hope someone at Garmin notices ?

  • I've had many Forerunners before the 955, all purchased after at least 6 months of release. Instead, I bought the 955 after less than a month and I learned the lesson: "never buy Garmin watches just got out"

  • My Forerunner worked fine for a month or less...then all of the sudden stop syncing to my phone and wifi. Ran all of the usual fixes and nothing...Factory reset and (after losing all the info) it worked again!...for 3 hours...then nothing...no phone syncing, no app syncing, not even searching for WiFi networks or connecting to HR monitors...it just stopped working wireless and went full on cable mode...Garmin is still "looking into" the logs and pics that I sent...Apple Watch series 7 coming in strong to back me up since my marathon race that I'm training for is in 2 weeks...thing Garmin might have just lost me to the AW Ultra...

  • I have never seen such an unfinished watch. I had Fenix 3, 6x pro, 7 solar, but I wanted something lighter and unfortunately the choice fell on the Forerunner 955. You can see that Garmin is more focused on the Fenix series, because changing Fenix 7 to 955 I felt a colossal decrease in software quality and workmanship. In my 955, each button works differently, the worst is the DOWN button, as if it jammed, my wife has a Forerunner 55 and it's the same with the BACK button. I was terribly discouraged by the Garmin brand and I don't even want to go back to Fenix 7, where everything was fine there. I guess it's time for a change...

  • Exactly the same for me
