Any showstopper issues with 955? Safe to buy? Big disappointments after the first months?

Any big issues with 955 that should prevent me from buying it? I saw some issues with BT and lines on screen, but this seems to be fixed. I' m not happy with GPS of F6 and display of F7 Sapphire is not working for me with the glare and low contrast.

What are be the big pro's of a Fenix 7 compared to a 955 other than Titan case, Sapphire (not for me anyway)? Will the 955 get update for the same time or is this much shorter for the Forerunner series?

  • I have had my 955 since release. The current FW release is much better, and whilst not perfect, definitely remedied a lot of the bugs that impacted my use case.  I had the 745 - and many other Garmin before this -  and I am happy with the watch for my use case.

    1. The display is a good size and legible during activities

    2. the touch screen is an advantage (and one of the reasons I bought this over the 255), and can be disabled if not wanted

    3. Ability to setup activity screens etc via the app is useful, if buggy at times

    4. GPS has bene fine for me , I always use the Multi GPS as the SatIQ battery benefit seems very minor

I never had a Fenix , but I did try the Epix 2 for a very short period and I couldn't manage with the AMOLED screen during activities. Watch was also too bulky for me.

    Regards

  • I think with F7 you can configure system settings now in the connect app. Is this also possible with 955?

    Ah, found it: support.garmin.com/.../

  • Yes , point 3 above .

You can configure a lot in the app

  • Nothing is a real showstopper as long as you know you will run into bugs here and there.

  • For me 955 is a big disappointment. I have bought it immidiately just after its release in June. Touchscreen works randomly. Often freezes to a point where only restart of the watch can (temporarily) fix it. This happens every few days. Also battery seems to drain quickly with the last few firmwares (8% during the night). Garmin ignores these issues and doesn’t even reply to say e.g. that they work on a fix.

If I decided today which watch to buy, I would choose AW Ultra.

  • Interesting I’ve had no issues with touchscreen and battery at night doesn’t drop significantly , I averaged about 0.5% per hour excl activities .

have you done a long power down and also removed from BT device , removed and reinstalled app and re-paired the device ?

  • Usually big drain during the night occurs when touchscreen is unresponsive next morning. So it might be conncted. To answer re-paring question, I have upgraded phone quite recently so I did re-pairing back then.

  • Like S.M.R. I do not have any major issues due to battery drain or touchscreen. Only well discussed, known bugs. Was on 11.12 now 12.27, waiting for 13.21.

I've done a propper restart (waiting some few minutes before restart) after every FW-update.

IOS and non-solar version from June

  • Since 13.21 I think it's finally the watch it was supposed to be from the beginning...

I really couldn't recommend it the first 4-5 months that I've had it, too much not working or implemented properly. It really felt like a rushed out unfinished product.

Now finally all the major bugs that I atleast have encountered are solved, it certainly still isn't perfect and still feel less streamelined/developed (sw wise) then the fenix/epix, but it works as it should.

My main issues until the latest firmwares:

    * Battery drain (connect iq issue): Fixed a while ago

    * Navigate to location on map bug: Fixed

    * Training effect issues: Fixed (for me at least)

    * Very crappy touch implementation in general: Fixed (kinda)

THe touch implementation IS fixed for the most part as everything works fine now, but this is what I meant with 'streamlined' because it still feels rudimentary and inconsistent in some cases.

But showstoppers? Not anymore in my opinion...

People will always run into bugs, but they aren't as global and bad (overall) as it was in the beginning.

  • Thanks for all the replys. That doesn't sound too bad.
