Step Pace vs Lap Pace?

On the 955 Solar under "Workout Fields", there is an option for "Step Pace".  Can someone explain what is the difference between that and "Lap Pace"?

  • If you have auto-lap enabled, it's possible for a given step in a programmed workout to be divided into more than one lap. (This will be reflected in the auto-lap alert, which will look different than it would outside of a workout.) In this case, step pace would be different than lap pace.

  • Thank you so much !  But if that's the case, shouldn't the "Workout Fields" also include "Step Distance"?

There's a "step duration" field which is distinct from "step time". Step duration changes based on the current workout step and can look like:

    - Distance To Go: [distance]

    - Time To Go: [time]

    - Step Duration: Until Lap Press

Outside of a workout it seems to act just like the Timer field.

I guess "step duration" isn't really a substitute for "step distance", though.

  • I agree. I tested out "Step Duration" today and I didn't feel it was a replacement for "Step Distance" especially since during Warm Up, "Step Duration" just displays "Until Lap Press" which isn't very useful.

I think adding "Step Distance" would complement nicely the rest of the "Workout Fields" and bring us a bit closer to the "Workout Screen" that the older Forerunners such as the 235 used to have built-in.

Thank you for your thorough reply!

  • I simply make a copy of Run activity where autolap (every 1km) is off and use it with interval trainings, so every interval is a lap and I use lap fields (lap distance, duration, pace)

  • This is what I used to do on my 235 but after spending $600 on the 955 I thought things would have improved.

  • I did the same and it works fine for me too… It would be great if during a workout the Auto Lap on Run activity turns off… As this is not a reality I just made a Copy of Run activity, rename it to Intervals and set Auto Lap off

I do the same because external services like Strava don’t have a concept of hierarchical/multiple sets of laps anyway (not counting Strava’s own “splits”, which are auto-generated after the fact), so I’d prefer if each step was equivalent to a lap regardless.

I have different sets of data pages for workouts vs normal runs so it fits my workflow.
