Discharge rate

What discharge rates are people seeing when using All Systems + Multiband

To get a 20 hour battery life I would expect to see 5%, but I am seeing min 5% and up to 8% (using a chest strap too)

(Using battery field info by FlipStone to determine)

  • I see the largest discharge rate at the start of an activity, then the rate decreases. Do you also see that?

  • How are you getting this data?  Is this enabled when you turn on Battery Estimates?

  • add the datafiled from the app store "battery field info by FlipStone" and then it will be in the data that goes to Garmin Connect

    apps.garmin.com/.../80d67ebb-78e9-4e07-9b82-f52e05ebfe89

  • it would make sense that the first part of an activity would display a larger discharge rate because it includes whatever was discharged prior the activity being started. this is a bit hard to explain but i'll try:

the big issue is the watch only reports the nearest percent battery, so for example.

imagine the battery "flips" to 90% 2 hours before your run but still shows 90% when you start you run. in reality, it may have dropped to 89.6% before the run, so that while something like FlipStone's data field will show a 1% drop for the first X minutes of running, it will really only have consumed 0.6%

    hope this helps

  • thanks. the Y-axis on mobile app showed decimal points, and ones like 66.2, 66.9, so i had presumed the FIT file had at least one decimal place for battery.

However, when i look at the .FIT file I see you are 1005 right, it is just per percentage drop.

  • I get around 6% drop using the same settings (also with the Flipstone battery field) in an activity. I've also been keeping a spreadsheet based on the watch battery level for a while and generally around 5 - 6 % with activities and on average 0.5% per hour daily average including I guess on average 1 hr of activities, and around 0.4% in general usage. I use the titanium watch face , have SPO2 on only at night and use DND sleep more approx 8 hours a day

  • Annywehere between 4 and 6%/hr here with all+multiband...

Unfortunately with the 955 battery tracking is quite coarse, it only returns full percentage values (other models this could be be in tenths or even hunderds). Also, depletion is not quite lineary... Depending on the percentage of the battery it can go down faster or slower.

The field I made is very simple, it just divides depletion by time. so only take the value at the end and preferably from longer activities (anythng under 30 minutes is well... a big uncertainty)

  • This is indeed pretty normal, the field can only see whole percentages... If the watch just went from 86 to 85 (even if it was like 85.7 to 85.4, not sure how it works in the background) in the first 5 minutes or so it will report it as "1% in 5 minutes! THAT'S 12% an hour!" As the activity time passes it stabilizes....

Guess it would be most logical to just take the value at the end (but yeah, same... if it then just decreases another percent in the last 10 seconds this will also skew results a bit so I just report it all the time ;) )

  • Thanks.

I added app from Connect IQ and synced my watch with Garmin Connect after letting it sit for a few hours since installing it but I'm not seeing any extra data in Garmin Connect.  I also enabled the battery tracking feature in my watch since i assume that's needed.
