Case Recommendations For Forerunner 955 Solar?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a protective case or cover for the 955 solar?  I'd like to be able to put one on before going for a mountain bike ride in the woods or while working in my lab around rugged military equipment that could potentially damage it due to accidental contact.

It seems like the ones that come with a built in screen protector aren't meant for use in wet environments which includes sweaty environments since it gets under the protector and causes problems with the touchscreen.

Thanks!

  • I got my 955 Solar delivered today and I am just settling down with that. How do you folks unplug the charger cable off the watch? Just pull straight out? I felt like I am breaking the cable, what a cumbersome design it is and experience coming from 735XT? Lol

  • I think you probably meant to make a whole new thread rather than respond to mine for this topic.

To answer your question though, just grasp the charging cable by the plug on the end that is plugged into the watch and pull straight down.  When new the cables are very tight and requires a lot of pulling effort.. almost to the point of feeling like it's going to break or as if you are doing something wrong such as not pressing on a lock-release button.  I've only had my watch for a week and plugged it in 3 times and it got a bit looser after the first time unplugging it.

I do miss the charging cradle that my Fenix 3 HR used.  That was a well designed charging solution.  Garmin should have at least put a 90 degree coupler on the end of the plug so the watch doesn't have to charge on its side.

  • Thank you  appreciate your answer. In fact I didn't want to start all new thread for my question but thought some owners of 955 will answer my question and you did thankfully lol. I am playing with my new 955, a funny thing is power button makes two clicks when pressed down, not sure it's a defect or normal by design! Other buttons make single click only, also the watch cme with11.12 firmware version and I turned off auto update promptly, it's time to run and see how it is going to be, fingers crossed

  • Do you mean you had to press the power button twice to turn the watch on?  I think there is just a delay before anything shows up on the screen after pressing it initially.  The first few times i turned my watch on i wasn't sure which buttons actually worked because i tried pushing a few different ones on the left side and then finally it turned on (i didn't read the manual since I've owned other Garmins before).

You probably will want to customize your running display screens in Garmin Connect so the data that you want is shown on the screen before running.  Personally, i like to use a screen with 4 data fields for running and i use Time, Distance, Pace and heart-rate.  I sometimes add a 5th field and use "Segment pace" since that's basically your average pace over the course of the run and tends to be a bit less erratic than real-time pace (real-time pace is rounded to the nearest 5-second increment unfortunately).  Also don't forget to setup your GPS for your activity so that you can determine if you want/need the extra accuracy of multi-band or all systems vs just the standard GPS.

I had to do quite a bit of tinkering to get my my watch setup to where i wanted it and i'm nowhere near done yet.

Definitely get a screen protector on yours too.  I went with the SuperShieldz 3-pack tempered glass screen protector and it is a great fit and hasn't moved or peeled up at all so far after sleeping with my watch on for 5 nights, running with it 8 times and cycling twice including several of those workouts being in heavy downpours.

  • The double click (2 steps click) on the buttons are common thing as you will see in this forum. Unfortunately these watches are not so well built as the price suggests.

  • Thank you I meant every time (Light or power button whatever we call it as ) top left button is pressed, it's not one click it clicks twice in its full motion like one time halfway through and then second time at the end. Same thing when the button is released, it seems to get stuck in the middle for a moment and then released back.

I usually don't use screen protectors on watch or phone but certainly look into it as the watch sits on my right wrist that bumps against things a lot lol!

Also noticed the battery drain is faster than expected, since full charge @ 5 PM yesterday through 7.30 AM today, the battery dropped from 100% to 83% with only 1 hour GPS workout ( Walk) and 1 night sleep tracking but yet to complete 24 hours ( BT is connected to phone but WiFi turned off completely) . With this trend all I can say is that full charge may last about 4 days with 1 hour GPS workout and sleep tracking, is it fair assumption?

  •  I hear you! I see this double click pattern with pretty much all 3 buttons on left side but 2 buttons on right side make only one click! It doesn't bother me but wanted to make sure it's not a defect or so with a brand new watch. Thank you confirming it's not me alone lol!

  • Oh weird about the "double click" on your buttons.  I haven't noticed that on any of the buttons on mine yet.

I bet the 1 hour GPS workout knocked out about 8 to 12% battery by itself depending on your GPS accuracy setting.

Do you have your pulse oximeter on?  I think by default it's set to run just during sleeping hours.  Chances are that Bluetooth is chewing up most of your battery.  There's apparently a lot of reported bluetooth drain issues related to the watch constantly auto syncing.

I keep my Bluetooth and wifi off except when syncing, use a watch face without seconds or heartbeat on it (to save battery) and I am currently at 71% battery left after 75 hours since full charge.  During those 75 hours there was 3 nights of sleep tracking(pulse oximeter only on during sleep) and nonstop wearing of the watch during the day with activity tracking enabled (steps and pulse etc), and a little over 2 hours of combined GPS-tracked runs between 2 different runs. I have the solar version but it's been overcast and rainy the past 4 days straight and I'm rarely outside during the day and do all my runs at like 2 am in the dark. I honestly expected better battery life considering I'm conservative with my setup, but this is still on pace for about 10.5 days without a charge at this rate if i ran it all the way down to 0% (which nobody does and I won't).

  • there is a tpu case for 955 non-solar, and you can use that for your 955 solar. However it will cover copper circle which is a solar panel so you have to cut the case about 2~3mm from inside not to coverr that panel...
