Running Watch Recommendations

Good afternoon,

Not sure where to post this, but I'm hoping this subforum would have more experience with some of the other Garmin watches.

Things I want, sync reliably with iOS, GPS accuracy, battery life, and $2-300, absolutely no more than $500.  A reliable HR monitor would be nice too.

I do about 7-10 activities a week, running, walking, hiking, yoga, biking, swimming.

Right now, I have a FR235.  Distance accuracy is not the greatest, battery life is meh, and the HR monitor is a +/- 20 guestimate, but it works for the most part.  The main issue I have with it is that it won't sync and loses Bluetooth connectivity randomly.  If I try to sync trough Garmin Express, it will just freeze.  I think it has to do with indoor runs, but not sure.  But the only way to get it to sync again is to power it off, and lose steps, HR, intensity minutes, calories, and a few other things.  It gets kind of frustrating.

Thanks for any advice.

  • The 235 is quite old now , you could probably get some good deals on the 245 which is a step up from the 235, but the new 255 is a much better watch if you want to stretch that far.  It will do most things you need. Just look at which variant as the Music one has WiFi and the non Music does not,

    I have had many Garmin over the years from the 201 , 305 , 405/410   through the 610/20/30 745 945LTE and now the 955.

I took the 955 over the 255 for the touchscreen option, the strata live segments and mapping / navigation functionality. If those are / may be important to you the 955 is the way to go.  It's just on the $500 limit you mentioned however. This is a much lower premium over the 255 thanI had expected.

You will notice in the 255 and 955 forums a number of firmware issues that are niggles that should get sorted in the near term.

The OHR is ok, I always use a chest strap however for the better accuracy (for my use case) and the additional running dynamics that it provides.

GPS accuracy is phenomenal on the latest watches.

    Hope that is useful.

  • Thanks for the link and advice.

I don't need maps, Wi-Fi, touch screen, or music.  Both have the same GPS band sensors, so the accuracy should be the same.  Battery life seems similar based on which GPS you're using, and the display is the same size and resolution.  Think the 255 will work fine for me. Hopefully the 255 will last more than one and a half years.
