Garmin metrics and e-bikes

I've just gotten an ebike to ride along with my existing acoustic bike.

I'm not sure I understand how Garmin "corrects" for an ebike when it calculates the reports on activities. In other words, does it then only report on heart rate for exertion? Does it handle things any differently than when I'm not on an ebike.

  • When you connect the ebike to your watch, it collects some extra data from your ride, like cadence, power mode, and assistance level, the watch can show you the battery status in 1% details (not some 5 bar like the ebike display).
I dont see, whather the watch would use the speed data of the bike. I don’t see metrics about my power effort, altough the my ebike has a torque sensor and knows the speed, so it could be calculatable.

Your effort and used calories is heart rate based, just like an analog ride. According to my experience I burn more calories on my emtb then my analog mtb, and that seems to be sonsistant and independent from the watch (same experience on fernix 5 without ebike mode) and my fr955. The reason seams to be pretty obvious, on the ebike my ride time is 100% acntive, i don’t rest, or make any short brake, it is full time riding up or down and i am full time in aerob zone.

  • Great explanation. Next I need to pair the watch I suppose. I'm using the 955 ebike activity so far so that records correctly to Strava and Connect. Did you pair your 955 to you ebike? How difficult was that?

  • Yes I paired the 955 with my emtb (uses shimano system). Paring was fast and easy, after that when I start eMTB profile on the watch and I turn on the bike, the connection is automated, it needs a couple of seconds to get the first data and the watch confirms “ebike is connected”.
