FW:12.27. FR 955 way off in measuring total distance & pace.

Hi all,

1. I recently got the FR 955 Solar. This is my first garmin watch. I went on a 7.5 km run 2 days ago but my watch showed the distance extra by 600 mtr, i.e. 8.1 km. The average pace was also off by more than a minute per km. I have been running on the route for a few years now so I know the distance of the route very well. I have been running with Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 earlier & had no problems distance wise.

2. I went online & searched for troubleshooting steps. As per the steps suggested by garmin, I made the following changes in watch settings :-

    * I confirmed my GPS was set to All + multi band.

    * I switched data recording to 'every second'.

    * I enabled 3D speed & 3D distance.

    * I waited for GPS bar to get a fix (green color) & waited an additional 1 min before starting my run.

3. After all the above, I went on a 6.2 km previously measured route the next morning with clear sky & no tall buildings around. I immediately noticed that each km being recorded by the watch was way short & hence the pace was way higher. The total distance reflected on the watch after the run was 7.54 km. It measured the the distance incorrectly by showing 1.3 km extra which is not the case as the route is 6.2 km.

4. The route as shown on the map in garmin connect app was spot on & traced my route perfectly.  It is only the measured distance & pace that was on a higher side.

5. If anyone has any suggestion to fix the issue I'll be grateful.

  • This is very interesting. Mine is in line with expectations. Another party reported exactly the opposite behaviour though.

Are you on the latest firmware , just to be safe.

Also try doing a "Long" power off , i.e. hold the power button in until the watch powers off, then restart it.

Also have you connected the watch to the computer and Garmin Express?

  • Hi! I think your problem might be 3d speed and 3d distance. It is counter intuitive but here on the forum several people mentioned that it should be used only when running with huge variations of elevation, not even in "normal" trails. You can read more doing some searches on this forum. That's also the reason why it is disabled by default.

  • Hi all.

    1. Today I went on a 7 km run on the same route. I had put on my FR 955 on one hand & galaxy watch 3 on the other. I also tracked my run on strava app on my phone.

    2. Today, I made the following 4 changes for the run :-

         * I did a long power off as suggested by @S.M.R.

         * I turned off 3d distance & 3d speed on my watch as suggested by @VincenzoC87.

         * I updated my watch to FW 12.27.

         * I did not wear my HRM Pro Plus Today & tracked HR on my watch.

    3. The run was in a clear & sunny weather. I'm happy to report that my watch was spot on today. It matched the distance & speed to that of Strava & galaxy watch 3 accurately to 30 mtr.

    4. Thank you @S.M.R. & @VincenzoC87 for your prompt reply & suggestions. Though I'll keep checking the accuracy for a few more days to confirm that it is not a one off result.

  • Wow thats great news!
