Should I set my max heart as my highest recently recorded or automatic?

Hello,

Did some searching but couldn't quite find the answer I was looking for. My highest recorded HR in the last year is 170, and I was definitely maxed out on effort. But automatic max hr detection takes it to 179 or 180. Which would be better to use? I'd like to have the most accurate training effect scores I can to dial in my workouts.

Thank you.

  • Your max HR should be the from the most recent hard run.

If Garmin detects wrongly, then ignore it. 170 to 179 or 180 is a huge discrepancy.

To obtain accurate TE, you need to set the correct max HR.

Run below 80% of max HR, to get aerobic TE.
