FYI: This fixed the GPS and other issues I had after upgrading to 12.23

After installing 12.23 I had slow GPS fix times, less accurate GPS tracks and other various small issues.

Performing hard reset followed by full device reset fixed all issues for me. Now my Forerunner 955 is getting GPS fix quickly as before 12.23 and the GPS tracks are very smooth and accurate! Overall the watch is performing as expected and I don't see battery drain. Re: battery consumption, you need to wait 2-3 days to stabilize. It is not a matter of consumption, but how acurately the level is indicated.

1. To perform a hard reset, press and hold the power button on the watch until the screen goes blank. Ignore the Controls menu and the assistance alert screen (if applicable). If your device is currently powered off and you cannot turn it on, simply hold down the power button for 60 seconds.

Next, plug in your watch’s charging cable to a computer or UL certified wall plug and then attach the watch to the charging cable. This should prompt the watch to boot up normally. Once it has fully booted up, remove it from the charging cable.

2. To perform full device reset, please see the link below for instructions:

First, sync your device with the Garmin Connect mobile app or Garmin Express.  Then follow the instructions in this link:

Resetting All Default Settings

  • Choose the "Delete Data and Reset Settings" option.

Note that you will need to customize your watch again, some settings will be lost (like Garmin Pay, etc.).

Use at your own risk!

  • Everyone has already tried this a 100 times, you can clearly see the watch syncing all the time, it's not an issue of accuracy of level indication, the watches now only last a few days instead of over a week and drain the phones too. This is a serious bug that Garmin needs to fix and posts like these denying the problem is NOT helpful.

The sync problem sometimes disappears for a day so far all we know you threw away your data and reconfigured everything for nothing, BTW, as it may just reappear tomorrow.

  • I was not suffering from battery drain and reading the posts here the drain issue is not happening to everyone, so your mileage with the reset I did may vary of course, just wanted to share what fixed my issue.

  • Eh, that's not what this is about though... He had issues with GPS accuracy and mentions what worked for him.

Btw, I have no sync issues at all here luckily. The only battery issues I had so far were with the connectiq bug, which was fixed in the 12.23 firmware. What phone do you have? Perhaps it's more in that area... android here (s22 ultra)

  • some settings will be lost (like Garmin Pay, etc.)

You also lost HRV stats and Training Readiness score and need to collect this data from scratch 3 weeks for HRV and 4 days for TR. All other data will be recover from GC successfully.

  • Before resetting, did you try to reboot the watch first ?

I feel a full device reset should never be encouraged and be a last resort only.

  • yes, tried to reboot, but didn't fix it.
