Power Save countdown begins at random times

My FR955 (non-solar) is current with firmware.

Over the last several weeks (prior to the latest update but even with the update),  I have been experiencing an issue with the power save - I am wearing the watch during the business day, working along, when suddenly the watch will alert me that it entered a POWER SAVE countdown.  I can stop the countdown, preventing it from completing the countdown, but one time I did let it go and sure enough, the watch went into power save mode.

I have scoured the options but can't find any that are enabled that might be the cause of this.

The Battery Saver is off, so what is happening here?  Does the watch lose its sensors and think I am not wearing it?  Or am I missing something more obvious?

  • This countdown is nothing to do with Power Manager.

It is supposed to happen if you've gone into the activities menu, have selected an activity but not started it. (eg. Start button pressed accidentally.) The timeout is settable in that activity's settings under "Power Save Timeout". It has two options: Normal and Extended. The idea behind it is to save battery by not using the GPS when an activity has been entered but forgotten about. After 5 minutes (and the countdown) it returns to watch mode.

If it's triggering at other times, that's a bug.

    It's described in the 945's manual: www8.garmin.com/.../GUID-55A5E621-7A12-47E2-84E6-44CF8F872D79.html

  • I feel like it is a glitch that has been happening for a while now. I went on a 10k hike on Sunday 29th and noticed that during the first few kilometers, it kept trying to go into power save mode. I had over 80% battery and had the watch face locked and showing my map for navigation.

After about 7km, I missed the message and it went into power save mode, wiping out my entire hike progress! I mean, what a stupid feature. I wish I could turn off power save completely! And why would it ever be acceptable to delete your current activity when entering into the mode!

I also noticed it trying to enter power save mode last night when I was doing nothing and not even in an activity. Battery was at approx. 50%. Allow us to completely turn off power save mode please!

Garmin, please sort this as it's really starting to make me question if a Garmin is the right watch for me. I do a lot of large hikes. If it ever happens hours into a future hike, it would be the last time for me.

  • Thanks for this.  Occasionally, the button for activity does seem to activate inadvertently.  It may be my wrist causing this.   I will pay closer attention to the watch to see if this is what is happening.

  • Do you think it would still activate even when the device is locked? My experience with the power save was happening when my device was in an activity, but the screen was locked.

  • In all of my cases experiencing this, my watch is not purposely in ACTIVITY mode - instead, it is in normal watch mode (or so I think) when I see the timeout appear.

I use activity mode just about every other day since owning the watch and have never had the timeout appear during an intentional activity.  I also have touch disabled during activities, which more or less acts like a screen lock (I never use the official screen lock feature of the watch).

  • Yes, so I’ve seen it when not intentionally in an activity, but also when in an intentional activity.

I do believe it’s a software issue so hope it gets fixed.
