Power Save countdown begins at random times

My FR955 (non-solar) is current with firmware.

Over the last several weeks (prior to the latest update but even with the update),  I have been experiencing an issue with the power save - I am wearing the watch during the business day, working along, when suddenly the watch will alert me that it entered a POWER SAVE countdown.  I can stop the countdown, preventing it from completing the countdown, but one time I did let it go and sure enough, the watch went into power save mode.

I have scoured the options but can't find any that are enabled that might be the cause of this.

The Battery Saver is off, so what is happening here?  Does the watch lose its sensors and think I am not wearing it?  Or am I missing something more obvious?

  • Had this happen once last weekend, also latest firmware etc. Run nearly finished, music player had suddenly acted up - stopped playing mid-song, would not resume - so I ended & saved run. Saw Power Save countdown (which I cancelled) while I was pressing the Lap button to exit the end-of-run summary screens. 955 Solar here.

Also, battery level was well above 50%, no obvious reason for watch thinking it needed power save.

  • Good point - In my case as well, the battery was at least 80% remaining charge.

Thank you for posting your experience.

  • Oh, wait - I think I just found the setting.

Power Manager > Battery Saver > Edit > Watch Face.

Mine was set to Low Power Mode and there is what appears to be how long before LPM kicks in -  Mine shows -3 days.

So, I interpret this to mean that after three days of showing the watch face it kicks into low power mode?  That would account for the seemingly random countdown appearing.

No idea how to change that '3 day' option, but nevertheless, I flipped this setting back to DONT CHANGE.

In your case, take a look at the other options there. Wrist Heart Rate or Activity Tracking could be one causing your issue.

  • Just checked my settings as you described, shows "Don't Change" and ~9 Days. Battery Saver shows Off. Seems like mine probably was a behavioral glitch. Given the music player halt/hang at around the same time, even more likely. Hope you resolved yours!

  • Yes, confusing that my BATTERY SAVER was also off prior to me looking at this, so it almost seems these settings are still active regardless of that overall setting.

  • It just happened to me as well. garmin forerunner 955 solar, power save counte down randomly starts. Battery is at 63% so no reason for LPS mode to kick in. Moreover, the LPS mode is turned off on my watch. Definitely a glitch with the latest firmware.

  • I've noticed the countdown a couple of times while in bed before falling asleep. I assumed an inadvertent start button press might have caused it

  • Also had this a couple of times in the last months

  • Me too, during previous months, but not since 13.22/23.

  • You're misinterpreting what you're seeing there.

The setting you're viewing is to change what happens when Battery Saver mode is enabled. The time shows how much longer or shorter battery life it will give you if you enable that option.

It should have no connection with when the countdown appears.
