Forerunner 955 vs. Treadmill

I know that there are typically distance calibrations necessary when using Garmin watches and a treadmill and when doing so the accuracy of the distance can be adjusted, however the pace of the workout does not seem to do so.

I am using the Garmin Coach to train for a half marathon and with most of the speed workouts or progression runs it is very difficult to monitor on the road - so my brilliance being what it is - said let's use my treadmill. Now my watch is twlling my I am anywhere between 2.5 - 3.5 min/mi off pace... this is causing the workouts to not be a curate in any way shape or form... again, I know the distance can be adjusted and it can take time for the watch to adjust but it does not help when there seems to be zero improvement is its calibration.

Could really use some help here!!

  • For me I found it was how I swing my hand. I.e.if  swung it fast it recorded me running faster.

    I gave up and bought a NPE Runn to turn my dumb treadmill into a smart one. Works great.

    Or I've heard a stryd will do similar

  • Thank you for reading and responding to my post. I had been looking at the stryd foot pod but don't really want another app working "next to" gsrmon connect as I'm pretty sure it does.

    I hadn't heard of the NPE Runn until you mentioned it and starting digging deep. Are you using your device with the Zwift app or just with Garmin Connect?

    If just Garmin Connect, are the Runn measurements added or do they adjust the workout measurements while on the treadmill?

  • the NPE Runn is seen on by your watch as a footpod. It broadcasts via ANT+ and bluetooth, pace, cadence. I had it sending data to my watch (for data recording) AND sending data to my tablet running zwift (for gameplay)

    Think of the NPE Runn as a Garmin Footpod (which you can't buy anymore) that is attached to your treadmill rather than your shoe.

  • If you choose the right app on the watch when running indoors it is reasonble accurate - Usiually around a few 100 meters on a 10k run.

    If you want more accuracy - you could e.g. buy the NPE Runn, but only do that if you are using ZWIFT. If you are not using Zwift you have other options (in no particulary order)

    Buy a Stryd- expensive but also calculates your running watts
    Buy a Garmin Running sensor - either a

    Or buy a Garmin HRM Pro pulse belt.

    Cheaper solutions could be to buy either a

    Zwift RunPod
    Coros Pod
    Wahoo TickrX Heart rate monitor

    I have been using several of the above mentioned - I prefer to use Stryd - Because running/training is not necccesary only about speed but also watts like riding on a bike.

  • I actually have the Running Dynmics Pod yet my pace is about 50 secs higher than the treadmill is showing so my treadmill ends up measure about 1.10 miles when my watch is just getting to 1 mile. I actually use the calibrate on my ForeRunner 955 after every run and still continues to be "off".  Should I only use the calibrate one time?  Any other thoughts?

  • There are two main reasons for differences:

    1) The quality of the the "tool" that measures distance and speed/pace. Poor quality gives differences.
    2) The Quality of the Threadmill. Every time you land ot the threadmill belt it slows down and when you are "flying" the belt runs faster.

    In many cases you can compensate for the belt running to fast by always setting an incline on the belt to something between one and three percent.
