Forerunner 955 - Sleep tracking: High awake time, low REM

Former Member

Hi together,

I have the FR955 for a week now and like it so far. But I noticed, that sleep tracking is somewhat inaccurate in regard of awake and REM phases during the night. Sleeping time and waking up time seems to be spot on for me.

The last 4 days I'm seeing a lot of awake time (40min - 2h!). I can not remember being awake that often in the nights. Additionally, the REM time is kind of low. I'm wondering, if awake time and REM is getting mixed up somehow?

The only thing that has changed the last four days, is that I'm sleeping with the window open :D Maybe sound is also taken into account for the awake phases.

Is someone experiencing similar problems?

Following you can find the sleep tracking for my last 7 days and from today and Wednesday in detail.

  • I'm wondering, if awake time and REM is getting mixed up somehow?

Yes. Some people may have active movements during REM. So watches can confuse them.

    Is someone experiencing similar problems?

I have a completely opposite "problem" lol. I have a lot of REM. Sometimes its shows REM even when I'm definitely did not sleep.

I wouldn't call it a problem as long as it doesn't affect how you real feel. The watch is not a medical device. The built-in algorithms are not ideal and may not coincide with the biorhythms of an individual person.

  • The Awake time seems accurate for me because I usually know when I need to wake up. It usually happens when my aircon is off and I need to take a pee.

The only problem I am facing is the sleep window. It doesn't seem to follow the sleep window correctly.

  • I had FR245 prior to the FR955. According to my watch, every night I get a not restful sleep due to Awake time between 30 minutes to an 1 hour. I am not really awake during these times. Is it real or not? I don't have the answers. Maybe I am a terrible sleeper. But my sleep tracking is similar to yours. I didn't have this issue with my FR245, though lack of REM sleep was consistent.

  • Have you solved it? I am facing the same issue. Quite annoyed by it, because sleep records influence other metrics like Training readiness, body battery.

  • > The watch is not a medical device.

Other brands can do it better at least and Apple very well, so why not Garmin?

  • I have accepted that I don't get enough Deep or REM sleep. My watch seems to work perfectly fine. So, I'm just thinking that I move around a lot while I sleep.

  • I am new to the Forerunner 955.  Used an Apple Watch for a number of years.  Having the same issue of awake time when I am sleeping dead to the world. The app I used on the Apple Watch allowed me to edit both start and ending sleep time.  It also allowed me to adjust those times it said I was awake but was really sleeping. My issue would be solved if I could edit those times even if it meant classifying them as light sleep.

  • I have the same issue. Bought the watch just recently so I don't have much data on it yet but the sleep tracking always records more than 1hour of awake time. Is there maybe some setting that I could change to take the sensitivity down a notch? The tracking is basically useless for me at the moment and I'm quite surprised that mi bands that I used before, and that are a fraction of the cost, could do much better job here.

  • Going back to my Apple Watch.  Should be a simple fix for Garmin to drop sensitivity a notch in their algorithm if they wanted to. While I may toss and turn, I am not awake.

  • All,

I'm sorry for any frustration with inaccurate sleep data. Since everybody's sleep results will vary based off of heart rate, heart rate variability and movement, I ask you to reach out to a Garmin Product Support agent directly. They will be able to take a closer look into your account to examine your data and create a report if necessary.

    Thank you!
