FR 955 Series Battery Drain after 12.23 sw (possibly due to BT connection)

After installing 12.23, rebooting several times then charging my watch I now see a battery drain of ~5% per hour without any activities. Which is to say my watch will last less than a day if charged 100% and I don’t record any gps activities. I’m on iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 16)

The watch also seems to run significantly slower, hanging between screens.

If you already installed it and found this post, I’m sorry. Upvote or comment and hopefully Garmin will fix this soon. If you haven’t installed it yet, don’t.

UPDATE:

There are currently two options to prevent this issue: 1) disable Bluetooth and manually sync via WiFi. 2) disable Strava live segments in Garmin Connect by going to settings>training>segments> click the 3 dots and switch to garmin segments. This is likely why not all users are seeing the battery drain issue.

  • Who leaves the GC app active on the phone via close the app? It seems to me one needs to leave the GC app active or certain functions on the watch do not function all the time .

  • 1) Yes

    2) Yes

    3) United States

  • Last night lost 13%. I fully charged before sleep to see what the drain was . Substantially worse than the 11 version software

  • Funny. Didn't had an problem for 3 days with 12.23 but since this morning my battery drain went up with 1% an hour.

I didn't install any new apps or widgets and didn't change anything.

  • I'm glad for this forum. I just got back from a backpacking trip where I had intentionally avoided the 12.20 beta and 12.23 release in case it would disrupt my trip. I was all set to upgrade when I returned but seeing threads like this one and the cadence issue give me serious reservations about turning "auto update" back on. while I know 11.12 has some noted deficiencies, it is a usable watch with that firmware and battery life on my trip was excellent.

over the course of 5 days, I ended up at 40% battery (used 60% battery). that included over 11 hours of All Satellites GPS tracking with optical HR.

the Solar feature added a fair bit capacity for a watch face that uses about 6%/day. it was pretty obvious during the day that the battery level during the day while fishing (no GPS running) rarely moved.

the only oddity that I saw was that there were some nights/evenings where there were some sudden drops in battery level (a couple percent in a few hours) but it then stabilized. after I disconnected bluetooth on my phone, nighttime/evening battery usage was much more normal. (I had my phone with me in airplane mode but BT enabled)

  • Thanks Derek for the feedback . You definitely made the correct decision. I recall reading an earlier post of yours where you mentioned doing that .
Whilst some bugs got addressed in 12.20 / 12.23 the result is significantly more issues in areas that are actually far more serious and irritating than those in the original 11.x firmware.

Hopefully Garmin sorts these issues correctly and timeously!

  • Same problem here 20% in 5-6h
