New Garmin 955 training status and race predictions differ to 945 (it replaced)

I've just upgraded from the 945 to the 955 (non Solar).

Charged the battery, followed the Garmin Connect setup etc.

Have not done an activity on the watch yet (I'm tapering atm), but I assumed it would just carry on where my 945 left off.

It shows all the previous activities that I have completed etc but the two obvious differences that I have noticed are:

- The race predictions (which were previously reasonable) are now completely ridiculous. I can do a 15 minute 5k apparently.

- My training status differs on each device. Whereas I left my 945 'Recovering', I am now 'Maintaining'.
On the Connect app I can literally toggle between the two devices on the 'Training Status' screen and get two completely different graphs (from what I assume is the same data).

I've looked through the posts here but can't see anything similar.
Any ideas? Thanks

  • I can only confirm.

Race predictor has changed. Predicted times are getting more accurate as you start training with this device but in some cases may be still way off even after month or so. In my case times seems to be more or less accurate.

Vo2max calculation has changed. Now its changing only a little. +/- 0.01-0.03 units mostly with one run.

Training status has changed too. My training status have been "maintaining" since the beginning of june no matter what i do. It seems to be based mostly on vo2max calculation. So if vo2max is not changing or changing only a little then training status is "maintaining" too. To trigger (un)productive status, change should be more than it is right now. You can achieve it only if you rapidly increasing or decreasing training load. Then you may get productive or recovering but only for a week or even less.

  • i can only confirm as well. I also think I read from DCrainmaker who made a point that not all data is migrated, and the watch has to learn based on data generated on the watch. My prediction went completely bad, but slowly improving during the next 3 weeks.

  • I think isn't unexpected. The algorithms have been improved and the migrated data may not all be usable for the new predictions/calculation.

  • Thanks all. I guess if the algorithms have been changed there is nothing I can do. Its just a shame there is a lack of transparency from Garmin to make things like this clear. It just seems a bit stupid that I can't carry straight on and have to instead build up an on device history rather than just using.. my history XD

Its also not clear how an algorithm change makes 'Recovery' now 'Maintaining. Is that to say that when I previously thought i was recovering.. i was not?

Its also annoying because my 945 5k prediction of 17:30 for a 5k was fairly accurate. The new algorithm suggests 15:00 which suggests that the new algorithm isn't as good (although hopefully it'll adjust downwards over time).

Can anyone point me to the DCRainmaker post/section as I can't seem to find it.

  • Just google him or search him in youtube. He is one of the most famous sportwatch reviewers.
