Open Water Accuracy issue 955

Hi,

As mentioned by other users, I have also Open Water Accuracy issues with the new 955 watch. It’s recording about 150m less on a 800m loop and the swim time recorded is about 30sec. slower per 100 than my usual pace.

Will this be fixed through a software update or will this be a continuous flaw? I thought the GPS is suppose to be much better than on the previous models. A bit disappointed.

  • Most likely the next releases isn't going to fix anything related to this either as there has been no Garmin representative asking more details and confirming that they would be investigating the issue.

But it's autumn for me, so they kind of now over half year to fix this OW issue and for the winter I'd rather have the training status/acute load/daily suggestions/race predictor etc etc working.

  • And also this year, this bug will be fixed next year (as usually).

  • some tips tricks

setting gps as smart or every second has no effect on OW.

try measuring on the other hand.

    next step:

    sync

    in the web application

    export to gpx

    delete the current record

    import gpx, edit as ow

  • Yes we know that the GPS-track (GPX) is pretty decent usually, but it is Garmin's job to fix the distance data not us to start doing fixing the distance manually.

They are giving some distance based on something that is unknown to us. Using some algorithm/method that is not working for all. That needs to be fixed, simple as that. The watch should be giving consistent data and the distance based on the Garmin distance and the distance based on GPS-track (GPX) should pretty much match each other.

  • Garmin support just got back to me with below manual instructions:

I have checked your account and noticed some GPS inaccuracies.

Please reset the GPS using instructions below:

    CPE Still Showing Expired?

These steps can only be performed on a compatible Windows computer.

    1. Connect Garmin Device to a Windows computer.

    2. Open File Explorer.

    3. Open the Drive for the connected Garmin.

    4. Open the Primary Folder.

    5. Open the Garmin Folder.

    6. Open the RemoteSW Folder.

    7. Delete the CPE.BINN or EPO.BIN.

    8. Disconnect the Garmin device from the computer.

    9. Power the Garmin device off and back on.

    10. Sync with Garmin Express or the Garmin Connect app.

    11. Select an outdoor activity such as a Walk or a Run.

    12. Allowed up to 5 minutes for the GPS to acquire a signal and lock.

  • All,

We have some other reports of Open Water Swim activity data in Garmin Connect (FIT File format) that displays differently than when exporting as GPX.  We are currently looking into these reports.  For updates on this investigation, please see:

  • why does Garmin not act on this issue?  I also bought the 955 and on a 2km swim it just records 200 m less. If I export the gpx and read it In other software, then it seem to be correct. So the file seems good but the Garmin software is not correct.

  • Hi , hope you are doing great, is there any info regarding this issue, since I have my 955 from 6 months ago I face this issue, I thought it was me not swimming enough for a long time (almost 3 years) and starting again given I was not aware of the exact distance I was doing, but since a couple of weeks I am swimming next to my wife on her SUP Board, while her Garmin Instinct marks 800m on the SUP activity, my FR955 only marks around 200m.

Please let me know if you have any updates on this or if you need any info from my end
